E91 roof speakers

I have recently been researching an upgrade to Logic 7. Having read a few posts on here I've seen comments from the USA members regarding speaker brackets being unavailable from BMW on that side of the pond.

I have just ordered a pair, and covers from BMW here in the UK and although they had to be factory ordered from Germany there is ample stock.

Perhaps anyone planning an upgrade can source brackets from the UK, or indeed Germany.

Post pics when you drop the headliner and do the cut outs for the grilles. I'll eventually be doing mine.

Here in US we can no longer order R.O.W. rest of world parts for our cars due to BMW complying with DOT regulations. Which sucks as we have to use a middle man or a company that will buy them and ship them and raise the prices ever so slightly.

No, I'd have to go look, but I want to say it was $70/side all in. Somehow I ended up with two sets of brackets, actually.

That project will take some planning, so I might not get to it until the spring.

That is cheap! I remember telling you like $500 all in, ha.

Dropping the headliner isn’t all too bad.

I may see what new speakers cost, but the brackets and other parts are in good shape. The main thing is planning out how to power that channel, as I doubt the wiring harness is there.

Does the wiring exist already in the headliner? Are the speakers driven off the factory HK amp?

in a logic 7 e91 the headliner speakers have a harness that runs directly to the amp in the driver's side.

best photo I have.
IIRC it was wrapped in with the rest of the tail gate harness so they may exist in every pre lci e91.
you can pop the rear of the headliner down far enough to look from the tail gate without taking it all the way down, but you'll have to remove the tailgate surrounding plastics

This option has me intrigued. The other thread about the water leaking through the speakers was the first I had seen these and I inquired there. My wagon has option 688 Harmon Kardon, which is the same/different than Logic 7 but in LCI? Someone mentioned there that there was "professional" stereo but I still haven't figure out what that actually is.

I have to pull down the headliner at some point to fix the curtain airbag in my wagon, and I may just get it done in black. It would be neat to add the speakers at that time if it's plug and play. Just because NPR would be soooo much better with more speakers.

I have no idea what they even really do.
they're more like big flat transducers.

tweeters? I don't know, I got like 5 of my own up front.
I have no idea pre/post lci differences either.
mine is pre.

I believe those speakers only came on cars with individual audio.
Good to know the wiring is there!

I think they’re fancy looking tweeters.

They are the equivalent to parcel shelf speakers in the E90 on the higher audio packages. Described as Mid/High range.

I think on both pre lci and lci. If the car Hd individual audio, then it has those speakers.

I didn't get any pictures. But dropped the headliner partially this morning and fitted the speaker brackets and cut the holes in headliner.

Remove all trims, hangers, handles and seals from B pillar backwards, lights can stay in as they don't fix the headliner to the roof.

That'll let the back hang down enough to work through.
The cut line for holes is already embossed on top side of headliner.

The wires come up the C pillar from the amp.

The hardest bit ironically was finding some nuts to press into the shell where the speaker brackets fix to the roof.
I've no idea what they use in the factory and couldn't figure it out from RealOEM. Eventually I found some plastic expanding jobbies from a Fiat that got a grip.

If you are coming from Base/hifi (I was Hifi) then you're going to be transplanting the whole audio harness, and removing a whole audio harness. The L7 AMP is round pins where as the Hifi is flat. I had hoped to only have to install the wires for the dash centre speaker and roof speakers but I pulled the whole loom in the end.

Ps. Making the holes in the rear door cards for tweeters was much worse than the headlining!

To add, I’ve found out these come on pre lci and lci logic 7. They also come installed on some HK audio models.

I'm 95% sure the correct nut to press into the roof is 32411095443.

I'm finally installing my L7 setup in the wagon that replaced my poor 6MT E91 a few years back. Going to order up a set of 4 of these nuts and hope they're right... the screws are M6, and this is an M6 Prestol Cage nut
