I replaced that hose in 2014 with a genuine BMW part, P/N 17127618510. The P/N superseded the OE 2006-build part (P/N 17127531590) and the design was changed where the plastic section extends from the connector at the coolant reservoir, clipped into the top of the radiator, then changes to rubber for a few inches to connect to the bib at the top of upper radiator hose. The plastic hose section is of a different plastic type as compared to the original hose.

What about using tubing like this guy did, but aluminum instead so there is no galvanic corrosion. I'm nervous about removing the clamp on the rad side and destroying the plastic connector so this diy avoids that.
https://www.e90post.com/forums/showt...353&page=4 Using this tubing from amazon and add a flare at the end |

Happened to me. Nice beautiful day not too far from home. Put me in reduced power mode. Coolant all over my engine took weeks to go away. Went to auzone bought high temp hose and metal tubing to fix. Definitely fix that straw like stock one before it breaks!

Thanks to OP for reminding us. I will be looking to replace at least the upper radiator hose and this bypass hose.
It makes me wonder why BMW doesn't just use a rubber coolant hose from the upper radiator hose connection to the coolant tank. Save a few pennies with plastic I suppose. I might use either a coated brake line to replace the plastic segment, or run a longer rubber hose from the upper radiator hose connector to somewhere close to the coolant tank and use a barb coupler to join the two rubber hoses as one member did. |

Beware that there is a somewhat high chance of breaking the nipple on which that hose attaches on the driver side (on the larger S-hose behind the radiator) as it also becomes friable due to temperature cycling the plastic.

Maybe the only week point I could say is the connection point from where the drivers side, upper radiator hose meets the tiny hose mentioned above. That got brittle & broke on me, which forced me to buy two hoses Other than that, all of them are original. |

I found aluminum barbed fittings, there is no 5/16" which is the outer diameter of the plastic pipe but with the barbed fitting the 1/4" may be okay. If not there is 3/8".
Aluminum is ideal as there won't be any galvanic corrosion. https://www.mcmaster.com/catalog/125/199 Item 5058K151 or 5058K141 What do you guys think? |

Mine broke too when I took the radiator off. Snapped like a cheap straw. Got a new one from BMW for $$$.

The one on my e90 was original at 100k- but the one on our M235i exploded and sent coolant spraying everywhere at only 40,000mi.... needless to say I too think it should be a preventative maintenance item. Both got replaced.
And yeah I'd just replace the entire hose instead of going to the trouble and I separate the plastic line in the middle that's a problem. In a rush that works as a temporary fix, but if you're doing it preventatively I'd just do it the right way. |

The clamps can be cut off with metal cutters and replaced with regular clamps. I replaced only the center part at first and it began leaking later at other parts, the whole thing should be changed

Try putting the pliers on the plastic pipe and twist. When I replaced mine with a 5/16" barb and rubber coolant hose I was able to remove the plastic pipe without much trouble.
I used ONE brass barbed connector and the other end of the 5/16" hose went onto the upper radiator hose barb directly. (And yes 3 new clamps). Here is a slightly different take by sirdaft1, using two barbed connectors and 4 clamps: https://www.e90post.com/forums/showp...0&postcount=52 |

What barb did you use? 2fast4 in the thread I linked used TWO plastic 1/4" double-ended barb connectors.
IIRC the plastic tubing was around 1/4" OD. Since I was not just replacing just the tubing, but swapping out a good section of the whole thing using a rubber coolant hose all the way to the upper radiator hose nipple, I used ONE brass 5/16" double-ended barb connector, after measuring the nipple on the upper radiator hose flange. I cut a few inches off the coolant reservoir end of the original rubber hose, because some jackass engineer decided the inside diameter should increase as it moves from the plastic tubing towards the reservoir. They could have just molded 5/16" nipples on the radiator AND the reservoir and ran a rubber hose in between. Everything fit well. All dry, no leaks.
