Feeler: HD Radio Retrofit for Pre-LCIs
Curious as to what the demand for this would be: Includes the IBOC trunk module, an antenna signal splitter, necessary coaxial and MOST cables and and connectors. The module would sit in your Sirius bay or if Sirius already there then on top of it. MOST connection would either be the one for Sirius (if unused), or if used or if non existent then it would be your CD Changer's (assuming it exists and is not being used either). You would then need to install splitter right next to the diversity antenna module on roof and run new coaxial cable to trunk. After enabling either MOST connection in the junction box you would then need either Autologic or NCS Expert to change the Vehicle Order and enable the IBOC in the MOST loop. That's all!! The myth about there not being a HD radio retrofit has been debunked. To put this package together I have spent hours on top of hours figuring out and sourcing the connectors and all other pieces. I bring it all together in a PnP solution. |

Sounds interesting, what's the cost?

A PnP retrofit kit would include the IBOC tuner and a single coaxial antenna cable with necessary connectors. Antenna splitter must be purchased on your own. This setup would use your existing CD changer OR your Sirius MOST connection, so no extensions are required. I can do extensions too but that would be separate.

Well that's considerably less than what you stated in your PM to me?
Will the Business Pro HU then display '(HD)' when a HD channel is being received as they do in the new cars even though it was not HD from factory? I recently had a 2011 E90 loaner, looked under trunk cargo & did not see an IBOC Module - just what is normally found. Unless it is located above the Amp in the left side well? Loaner had the base audio package - when in HD mode - didn't sound any better than standard mode. Anyone have experience as to any sound improvement with HD in Hi-Fi or Logic7?

In 2008, as long as you had option S653 in your vehicle config. It was an option, never standard in pre-lcis. There was no "HD-Prep" either like Sirius or CD Changer's. If you had the option you had all the wiring plus the IBOC, etc. If you didn't, you had nothing, not even cables in place (and they told you it was not possible to retrofit IBOC). The issue for BMW was commercial as far as their dealings with IBOC, it was not a technical discussion.

When you added IBOC, did it also enable Traffic Information?

Yes, that's the whole purpose of the splitter, to leave the existing coaxial connection to the head unit and to create a new lead which will go to the IBOC. In the picture, you'll see the HD signal, the TI icon and the traffic (605, as usual!!).
By the way, I have another IBOC unit, cable and connectors, ready to ship! |

I'm thinking about it, however I already have Sirius and CDC installed, so I'd have to create a new MOST connector/cable, and probably power/canbus cabling and patch it into the car at the MOST block for the MOST and not sure where for everything else.

Right, if you want to keep using your CDC and Sirius you would need a brand new MOST connection off the junction box. Power and ground you can simply tap off of the power and ground to either of those two. Easy easy.

I have a 2007 E92 w/ the factory iPod adapter coming from the glove box. It is accessed through he CDC source. No Sirius, no iDrive. Would this be compatible? What's the price at nowadays? This may be a little summer gift to myself.

Sounds interesting. I currently have a 2006 330i sedan with I-Drive and Sirus. No CDC though. Based on that configuration would every part from your retrofit kit be required in my case? If not, would you be willing to sell the kit with only the required parts?

Dumb questions.
What is a MOST? I already have a sirius deal installed from the factory, but never registered or paid monthly. I assume we'd have the monthly fees or is this a hack? Thanks |

In fact, if you don't have TI then your set up is even easier as you don't need to split your existing antenna lead, just reroute it to the IBOC and that's all. |

Oh, MOST is the optical network around the car where all the different components are connected to, e.g., the top hi-fi amp, HU, CDC, telematics, IBOC, Sirius, etc. |

However, because of the super early build of your car, I am not sure whether HD radio was already being made into an option. Your HU and the FW may not have the option for you to enable through coding. |
