DMFW and 335is/550i Clutch

I just got a custom BEF and my stock clutch can't keep up anymore.

I would love to keep the clutch feel as stock as possible. So I am planning on getting a new DMFW and a 335is/550i clutch.

I am currently at 450/490 and not planning on going too much higher.

Does anyone have experience with a new DMFW around this power level?
I don't want a SMFW because I am afraid that it would hurt the transmission in the long run. Is the SMFW harmful to any component?

I'm trying to figure out my clutch situation too. The highest tq rated clutch I found that still uses the OEM DMFW is the Spec Stage 2+ which is rated at 545tq (from the engine). I'm leaning towards this one myself.

As for flywheel, I'm leaning towards dual mass. I don't want to deal with the chatter. To answer your question, I have yet to find proof whether it is damaging or not. My guess is that yes it does as the chatter is caused by gear lash - the small amount of 'play' in the gears rattling. Vibrating gear teeth sounds like would lead to the gear teeth prematurely wearing overtime...

Crank or wheel horsepower? I probably had that at the crank and it held up beautifully. Felt like a brand new car. Crisp, precise, and firm. I loved it.

I am running 450 at the wheels, but still would love to take the oem path. 335i/550i clutch and dmfw

as I am not planning on going over 600hp I should be fine with dmfw, so I will go with that option, as for the clutch, there is a guy in Europe who makes custom clutches and I use one of his clutches in my e46 drift car and it has held up really good so far, so I might get his clutch which should probably be cheaper than the OEM.

Details on sourcing through this guy? Just keeping my options open, I'm stage 2 and 163k miles deep on the factory clutch, so I'm thinking Ill be going to a 335is/550 clutch when I replace. Interested in options for my e46 drift car though!

A fresh DMFW may be able to handle up to 500HP/TQ.

What happens is as they age they will become imbalanced and throw a CEL for misfires.

It will constantly throw you in limp mode as a result.

A SMFW will not hurt the transmission. The SMFW causes an audible rattle. That rattle can be tamed by increasing idle if you have MHD.

I have the 335Is/550i clutch and am running S2+, feels like factory, even better with the M CDV replacement installed.
The Dinan 550i runs the factory clutch with a lot more power/torque and higher curb weight than our S2+ cars without issue.

My car is not set-up for track use nor will it be, if it was I may have gone with something more compromising like the SMFW and a clutch that is designed for track abuse. Just wouldn't be able to stand the chatter with such an elegant vehicle...

You can reduce SMFW rattle significantly by raising your idle with MHD.

Hey Jeff, yeah I heard that and I think as things break-in it gets a little better? I personally have a zero tolerance for ill-mannered clutched lol.

That's just me though....

I hear you.

So yea the SMFW setup with a new clutch will require a good 300-500 miles to fully break in and quiet down. Raising the idle further quiets down any rattle noises from going with the SMFW.

For a few folks the SMFW has 3 benefits, since it's less moving parts it's less prone to fail like the DMFW over time. The SMFW is generally cheaper and lastly it's the only option for folks over 500HP as the DMFW becomes to imbalanced in the 500+ range.

I have a m factory smfw and a 335is clutch and i am close to that power level Fbo with E40 and inlets the reason I didn't go with the dmfw is because if I am gonna spend $500 on a flywheel I don't want to worry about replacing it again

I raised my idle to 950 and don't really notice the rattle I went to uuc tranny mounts which are probably too agressive but I'm fine with it

Glad to hear the idle raising helps.
