Benefits? Well you get the suspension of a truck if that's what you want. (Enjoy off-roading?)
I'd take a RWD 335i over a 335xi with coils any day of the week.

In what ways may it decrease performance? Maybe the car was engineered to be rear wheel drive, and maybe it would have a better weight distribution balance, but I think it's still a well balanced car, no?

Pros:
AWD xi+snow tires= tank Faster acceleration from a stop. from a dead stop car is so easy to launch with little effort especially with a tune. Rain doesnt affect the car at all. Drives great with AWD in rain AWD + traction off + snow = madness fun Cons: Slower than i's on rolling speed. Less fun since no wheel slips on accerleration Less fun in handling due to not feeling the ass of the car kick in while turning Heavier so feels a bit slower rides a bit higher can feel more body roll when changing lanes at higher speed. I really like my xi with a tune alot more than a 335i for daily driving but sometimes when going all out for performance and etc in highways in mexico i do want the RWD SOMETIMES.

It never affects my RWD cars either, not even very heavy rain with flooding on the road. Even with RFTs...

What i mean is that Xi's are bit more stable and grips better in the rain at harder driving VS the i's. Just how the i's will grip lighter and pull faster on dry pavements VS the xi's.

XI is heavier and the suspension is not the greatest. Those are the only real downsides. Gas mileage difference is minimal at best. It is quicker 0-60 and in the 1/4 mile stock as recently tested by C&D. RWD is more sporty and fun. XI is much less likely to leave you stuck in snow.
If you need AWD get it, if you don't...........don't. |

I've seen xi's with springs as well Eibach or H & R's and they look better than stock but heard rides a bit rough.

Isn't there an issue where the rear can't be lowered as much as the front or something? EDIT: I was talking about the rake issue.

If you drive in a snowy state which you must if your location is correct then the awd is a godsend. I was passing 4 x 4 trucks that were still spinning.

I live in New England and own three RWD BMWs. A good set of snow tires is all I need during the few days of poor driving conditions each winter. RWD is clearly superior the other 350 days of the year...

I live in Chicago -- where we are quite familiar with heavy snowfall, black ice and the like -- and I completely agree with this and similar comments. The xDrive gives you all the best of an RWD BMW with the practicality of AWD for less than ideal conditions. Those of you who clown it because it's heavier, doesn't drive precisely, exactly like an RWD and does not possess all of the benefits of an RWD car are, respectfully, stating the obvious AND missing the point. You either need AWD or you do not.

What's funny about this thread is a) it's been beaten to death so nothing new is gained by it b) it doesn't seem to acknowledge that everyone's needs are different
If you can afford to drive your 3 only when the weather is good, or you live in an area where the weather is always free of snow, isn't an i the obvious choice? If you need to drive your 3 daily, and there is frequently bad weather, you may want to pay the extra $$$ for a x-drive. Most of the other things are facts and objective, not a matter of opinion, such as different suspension, added weight, lower mpgs. I drove a E92 328 x-drive steptronic, and the mileage was worse than my 335 6-man. That's my personal experience. The 328 had zero miles when it was loaned to me, so who knows. I do know when my 335 was brand-new, the mileage did not improve as it got broken-in, it was what it was, and still is: the same, even after a software upgrade. |
