335i Engine temp POLL (335i drivers only)- normal spirited driving/traffic/long trips
Yet another poll, but this time we should see the difference between oil cooler cars and non-cooler cars.
Several people have noted seeing high temps from normal spirited driving, or long trips, or even just bumper to bumper traffic... THIS IS A PUBLIC POLL, CLICK THE RESULTS NUMBERS TO SEE WHO VOTED! In my personal opinion, there is a flaw that exists in only some 335 engines that cause the overheating, and this flaw is made more of a problem on cars without the oil cooler. Personally, I have never seen temps past 255ish... and I do not have the oil cooler, and I have run my car as hard as humanly possible without being on a (real) track, not to mention I am NOT running a turbo tuner! for you folks with the oil cooler and the MT (or if you're lucky enough to have the Step and got a cooler), what typical temps do you see when you romp on it? Under 265 seems to be the same for both trannys - under 240? 230? Pls post some #'s for comparison

6MT Coupe. Oil Cooler. Runs straight to 225 degrees & I haven't seen it move from there EVER. City/Highway/on the throttle/etc. -- just doesn't move. I don't track the car.
Its been fairly cold here in NJ. Spring just coming to us now. But even on the 50/60 degree days I haven't observed any difference. RiXst3r ----- I wonder if you would get a more meaningful result from your poll if you lowered the temperature cut off in your poll from 265 to like 230??? |

I have 6MT, sport package (which means I have the extra cooler) and mine tend around 220 to 230, however, I am in the Northeast and we have not seen many days over 50 laterly. Even on 20 degree days its around 220.

I tested my 335i sedan auto with 01/07 production date. I drove the car in LA traffic in DS mode while rev'ing to 3k in stop and go traffic. It got annoying after 10mins but after a few mins I noticed the temps rising. It got a little above 260 at which point the freeway opened up and got into speeds of 80mph and i got out of DS mode.
Another occurance was after 1 hour of normal LA traffic driving and once the freeway opened up this SC FX35 wanted to play. Went off the freeway into a dead street and let it loose. Once I came to a stop I noticed the temps had gone over or were at 260's. |

There have been several reports of automatic transmission cars with the sports package not having the cooler. There are also lots of automatic/sport owners contacting BMW to try and get the cooler installed. (good luck all!) What I meant was weird is that NYBMW335 says that his MANUAL transmission car with the sport package doesn't have the cooler either. That would be the first case that I have seen of a manual/sport car not having the oil cooler. Given the warmer temperatures that some of the cars run, it certainly wouldn't hurt for all of the cars to have the oil cooler. |

I guess the next question and thread that should be started is:
Are the cars with the cooler that have the Step Trans actually running cooler? Be a bummer for all of us to beg for a cooler that might not make much of a difference in the first place. From the pics that people have posted it looks like a small little cooler and the spot it's placed makes sense for air flow to it, but also blocks off the brake duct as if it were retro fitted at the factory after the fact. So are the cars with the cooler running any less warm than the cars without it? I may have to pull out my folding chair and white shoe polish. Paint the windows up in some protest jargon and sit with car out front of the biggest dealership in Arizona HAHAHAHAHA!! AM I EVIL? YES I AM!!!!!!! |

OK, how do you tell on the physical car?
I have a 335i e92, Steptronic w/ Sport Pkg, production 12/06. Where do I look?? How do I tell?? I'm not an engine guru but I do want to know...though car has 1600 miles and I've never seen temps go near the high side.

I'm guessing not too many of you here ever owned a turbo'ed car prior to this? It is normal for them to be running 30-40 degrees hotter than N/A cars...
Just hang in there till we can get an aftermarket intercooler, that will lower the temp considerably...turbo'ed cars are made to handle the heat so don't sweat it, BMW know what they're doing...
