Use the electronic dipstick in the indash computer.

Boo... I knew that. I was hoping there was a less computerized way, obviously besides draining it.

I'll have to consult my manual; I assume the electronic dipstick instructions are in there.

You're gonna get the same answer in there. BMW has removed all of the dipsticks in I think all of the cars. It's all electronic and it doesn't always tell the truth.

oil cosumption

I am also having an oil consumption issue, although by bmw's standards it is acceptable; so after dealing with some pricks at the dealership I decided to look into it my self. I popped the hood and noticed oil on the headers, in no means is that a good thing. So i lifted up the engine cover and was checking the bolts on the valve cover adjacent to the oil and to my surprise i was capable of pulling one bolt completely out and loosen others with my hand. After talking to my mechanic, he said this is a normal problem for the e90 330/325 as the valve cover came over torqued from the factory.

Might be related.

The oil consumption was 1 ltr /4500km. It did so the last 15000km before they changed the exhaust valves (to fix the persisting ticking on cold start, as per service bulletin) and then it STOPPED!

I am at 6000km later and I just checked it; full.

What a "coincidence".

Well so far, I've done about 4000km since January when it asked for oil. Oil gauge is hovering between 3/4 and half full. Let's see if I can make it up to 8000K before it requires another litre.

OK I am at about 8000K andI just got the oil warning alert.

I hope that is considered "normal" consumption.

I occassionally drive it a bit hard but it is an automatic after all.

Garage List
Firstly, new member here and proud E90 owner!

Anyway, I just recently bought my 330i manual which is a 2005 model with only 48K km on the clock. First thing I need to do is get rid of the Continental run-flats! They are hard, noisy and 'tramline' quite a bit - 225/45/17 front and back.

A few odd things that I have had to get use to - there is no temperature gauge for the engine, so no way of knowing when the engine is up to operating temperature. When I got the car I eventually saw how to check the oil level and it was on the halfway mark, and from what I can see the car was serviced in January this year. It was serviced at 42700 km and when I first checked and saw the half way mark level it was on 47000 km. Then yesterday I checked the level and all of a sudden I see it's on the 1/4 mark! Will keep an eye on it. The manual says that only once it has reached the minimum mark it should be topped up with a litre of oil - rough calculation tells me that would be every 9 - 10K km!!

My gut wants me to be skeptical of what your mechanic says. But my oil consumption rate has increased so im open to new ideas.

Im at about 1 qt every 6,000 miles. I have 79k on the clock, and never had to top off my oil before i hit 68k miles.

Dunoo wtf is going on.

FWIW, I have two 328s, a 2009 N52 and a 2011 N51 SULEV. Both use 1/2 quart in 7-8K miles. I think this is a normal and acceptable consumption rate.

I always thought only the M's burn oil at rates like this.

Its prob 3/4 qt per 6000 miles actually. I might have overestimated a little.
