Grab a beer and catch a local band at Pelham....dinner at Brick Alley Pub and/or Gas Lamp Grille. Drive along the "12 mile drive"...Ocean Drive. Check out the Tennis Hall of Fame. Go to first beach (Easton's Beach).
I LOVE Newport. Like E90guyinRi says, you can't go wrong. Just park and walk up and down Thames and you'll find a ton of things to do.

I live in Newport so feel free hit me up if you come down.
There's so much to do during the summer down here. If you're looking for a place to stay the Viking is a good option but I'd recommend the Newport Harbor Hotel or the Marriott. Both of them are right down town on America's Cup and walking distance to everything. There are a bunch of B&B's and Inns you can try if you'd like as well. When it comes to food there's a little bit of everything. If you're looking at the upper range you can hit up Castle Hill, Clarke's Cook House, or 22 Bowen's. Seafood is a must....try Scales and Shells or The Mooring. There's plenty of pub type places like Brick Alley Pub, Red Parrot, Buskers. Things to do.....if you haven't been down Ocean Drive....it's a must. You'll see some of the best views of the ocean and probably some of the craziest houses you'll ever see. Take a walk on the Cliff Walk.....check out the mansions. They give tours daily. Rent some scooters and tour the historic district. Hit up the beaches. Go on a harbor cruise on the Rum Runner or any other of the harbor tours. Tall ships will be in town and America's Cup races are here this year too. Not sure of the dates. Night life.....if you like live music hit up the Blues Cafe, Pelham, or Dockside. If you're looking for a dance club you can stop at Studio 21 or Tusk at the Rhino. There are plenty other great bars to hit up.....you can just walk down the street and stop in whatever interests you. Check out the Newport Yachting Center's website. They have the Sunset Concert series and Comedy series. They have a Reggae Festival, as well as, Lisa Lampanelli and Jim Breuer. Plus the Jazz Festival and Folk Festival. Bottom line.....you'll have fun and if you want to meet up just let me know. There's a few guy in the area like onebamf335i, plarkin, and myself just to name a few. |

Had a blast:
Stayed at Newport Inn and Suites (reasonable but not fancy) Walked all around the Thames/Americas Cup (shopped and such) Had lunch at 41 Degrees Saturday-awesome Happy Hour at Atlantic Beach Club Dinner at 22 Bowens-awesome Drinks and debauchery at Pelham Sunday brunch on the pier by 22 Bowens-forgot the name Headed out to the Fort-closed for renovations. Moved over to Newport Experience on the cliffs for a few cocktails, then next door to the Castle Inn (WOW!) Took the drive along Ocean Ave and then had to start the journey back to NJ Ill post some pics later or tomorrow...I have to upload them. All in all, we loved it there and even joked about getting a summer rental. I imagine it gets hectic and crowded once Memorial Day hits though |

Nice....you really took a lot in for such a short time being here! 22 Bowens is probably my favorite restaurant. Great location and great food.
Glad you got to check out so many things. I'm looking forward to seeing some pics! Once you get a taste of Newport you tend to keep coming back. A summer rental isn't a bad idea....even if it's just for a weekend. Sometimes it can be cheaper than a hotel. And you are correct. Once Memorial Day hits it gets very crowded. It takes a lot longer to get around town. You picked a great weekend.....great weather...and avoid the chaos before it starts. If you decide to come up again I can give you some different ideas. There's so much to do....one of the reasons I love living here. |

Two different worlds entirely. I mean....there's a lot to do in Providence but there's nothing that really sets it apart from other cities . If you're going to drive up here....you might as well either stop in NY or go the extra 50 miles to Boston. In Newport....it's scenic...relaxing....historic...and the night life can be comparable to most cities. As you know....I live in Newport.....and I rarely if ever make the drive to Providence. Unless I'm in the mood for a particular restaurant or going to check out something in 3D IMAX. I'd rather spend my time in Newpy.

Southern RI is also pretty nice. Lots to do down in the Narragansett/South Kingstown area. IMO the beaches are far better in Narragansett than they are in Newport.
