Losing Coolant Quick
Hey Guys I've been losing coolant pretty quickly and it's really worrying me. I have to fill up about 33 oz every 5 to 7 weeks. I've had a couple of mechanics check it out, but they can't seem to find where I'm leaking. They're not BMW specialists, but mechanics nonetheless. I'll be taking it to a BMW specialist shop soon, but wanted to see if anyone has experienced coolant loss and how you've resolved it.

I replaced my OFHG some 2k miles ago so really recent. I'm not getting any overheating, but I do get the error where my coolant is low.

A pressure test would definitely be the best thing to do.
The expansion tank is known to fail. I've replaced mine, it was leaking through the seams connecting the top and bottom half. Replaced my radiator as well after a crack formed near the upper rad hose. |

This is what I've been thinking as well. Will need to tell this to the BMW shop I'm going to this week.

I second the expansion tank, I was adding coolant every other day for a week before I noticed the seal on my expansion tank broke, and was leaking when the engine reached operation temps. It's a simple DIY and the tank can be found relatively cheap.

Expansion tank seam split
Expansion tank cap failing to hold pressure Crossover plastic pipe above the radiator. Brittle and breaks when disturbed Any rubber hoses swollen due to motor oil contamination Radiator end tanks Turbo coolant lines orings Oil filter housing not repaired properly (bolts not tight enough, damaged or shoddy gasket) Coolant pump Loss internally via cylinders Heater core Usually it is one of the first half or a few of them |

I was first leaking coolant from my expansion tank. You can easily see the leaks from there as the seams were split and there was liquid everywhere. Expansion tank is an easy DIY also. A month later my radiator was leaking. I found it was leaking from there by adding UV dye to my coolant and using a black light to see where it was leaking from. After the shop replaced my radiator I have not leaked anymore coolant. I did have to top off my coolant a couple times after the radiator replacement but everything has been perfect since.

i've been experiencing a heavy amount of coolant loss as well. 07 335i
i have to refill half the reservoir tank every 1.5 weeks but there are only 2-3 drops where i park which does not add up to that amount of leakage any opinions? |

Did you try to check the plastic under belly to see if the coolant leaks there and evaporates? Try giving a quick look arround the frame of the expansion tank and see if you can spit the marks or pattern left by the coolant leaking its way down to the ground.

I had the same issue, had to add coolant every 10 days, there was no sign of leaks. Had the car taken to my mechanic and after running the car, they found out the radiator was slowly leaking and evaporating over time. Had to get the radiator replaced. BEHR unit for about $200. No problems since.
