great power
no issues other than poor MPG

im only getting around 31/33 MPG

car is effient dynamics model 177bhp,

i was expecting to get 50mpg +

do mostly 10mile runs on occasion 20-30mile runs, driving the car moderately to very easy, never going over 60mph

car is running 19" alloy wheels rather than stock 17'' but alloys side to side are same size overall if your no what i mean,

not sure whats causing bad MPG

iv went into the hidden computer of the car and water temp is good in around 85 oC to 89 oC

Have you tried resetting the MPG calculator by pressing and holding the button at the end of the left hand stalk?

Short distances would play a big part in that.

10 miles is nothing as the car is barely up to temperature.

MPG sounds fine around town. I used to get 25.

Motorway I'd expect 60 ish with sensible driving.

Stop worrying

I assume you are just out of warranty?

Even with your shorter journeys something is defo up.

My 177bhp lci gave 45-50 despite no effort towards economy whatsoever...

Defo M badge is destroying your MPG

Reset the MPG on the car, and drive on motorway to see what sort of sensible MPG you get.
If any problem starts with EGR valve.

My 320d e91 M Sport has just topped 140,000km and returns:

Town / Urban: to and from work etc 6.8 ltrs/100Km = 41.5 Mpg

Combined driving on a weekly basis: 6.1 Ltrs / 100Km = 46 Mpg

Autobahn: 5.5 ltrs / 100Km = 51.3 Mpg

A lot depends on: Tyre size "rolling resistance" use of Aircon - 3Mpg, local terrain, hills or reletively flat, so many variables even altitude, Humidity and Air temperature can affect fuel consumption.

so drive how you want to drive and use what fuel you need to.

The cold weather will be hurting you somewhat. I see on average 5mpg less per tank when its 0C on my commute than +10C.

That's not normal MPG.

I get about 52 in the summer and 47 in winter driving fairly hard.
I know identical cars can return different mpg but for a 177 320d that's 15mpg short in anyones book.

You should get better fuel economy with cold weather, cold air is more dense than hot air, containing more oxygen, perhaps your car just can't grasp physics

That doesn't take into account that diesel engines are very inefficient when cold and they take much longer to warm up in colder weather. The cold also affects the fuel as the fuel companies have to do more to the fuel and add different additives during colder months afaik to stop waxing.

Have a look at this post on BabyBMW. This guy improved his car's economy by 10 mpg after a little judicious TLC. Maybe you have similar issues......

TLC for 10 mpg

Don't forget your car is an auto, so there will be the extra mpg penalty on the shorter trips. Not sure many of the others here, are in an auto 320d.

An autobox needs additional warm up controls, so that bites even harder on mpg, with short, cold start runs. Worse in colder weather.

Have you made a decent run at legal cruising speeds, with reseting the OBC, just to see what the potential mpg is in good conditions?

That is one of the best ways to gauge where a car sits mpg wise. You can't judge and compare with other users 'fantastic' mpg figures, unless knowing the conditions, or driving style.

You may be low, but you do need a baseline to work from.

cheers for reply pete,

i think im worring to much as said maybe

iv checked it out and my daily commute is 7-8 miles to work

OBC is saying my average speed is 27mph

OBC is saying im averageing 30.7 MPG

temperate is always 0 oc to -3 oc at present were im at in northern ireland

i do drive fairly slowly,iv gone out of type R and subaru phase

car is possibly fine just due top being auto, cold starts, car probally only warmed up by time im finished journeys,

im doing a 60 mile trip tomorow on good main roads and motorways,
so it will tell a story,

il reset the OBC and see how i get on and update alll

As said auto car and short journeys may be culprit.

I am in similar situation like yours, but difference is that I drive manual and petrol car. I get same mpg as yours. My MPG is at 31 and my average speed is around 27-29 on display.

I commute only 6-7 miles and by the time I reach my office, it hardly gets warm up.

Try to go to hidden menu and observe the temperature when you reach your destination.

Start with
1- Clean EGR
2- Reset MPG
3- keep an eye on coolant in hidden menu to see wether you reach optimal temperature.
4- Also do some long journeys to get the correct mpg.

What sort of mileages your car has?

All the best and remove the mini culprit (M badges on the grill).

I just have one more thing in my mind.

I think as you put M badge on your car, may be your car thinks, its M3 and try to behave decently like M3, hence your mpgs are low.
