Logic7 EQUALIZER ?'s
Can anyone please explain the best way to set the equalizer. I listen to mostly Hip Hop with some rock, jazz, and new age thrown in ( I'm a bit of a conousier). If there are any professionals out there who could describe what each set of bars means, I'm sure I would not be the only one to appreciate it. It's funny, I had one guy tell me to just set them like a pyramid and another guy tell me to set them like an upside down pyramid. This was what really confused me. Like everyone else out there I feel like I bought the perfect car and I want the audio to relfect that. Thanks!!!

the further left you go, the lower frequency of sound you are adjusting. there is NO perfect setting. it's all in your ear. I went one bar at a time, cycling ALL the way down and ALL the way up over and over, until I knew what sounds were being modified, then adjusted each until I loved how it sounded.

The smile usually works best for the average person but for those with sensitive ears more adjustment may be needed.

And I thought the speaker location and selection was optimised to represent neutral sounds with respect to the car acoustics inside and obviously only the driver. And that it was up to the recording studio to record what they intended to reflect.
So it would make sense to fiddle with the settings only if - BMW messed up with Speaker selection and posisitoning - The recording studio messed up the recording, or your taste is different - The acoustics inside change due to luggage or passengers So setting it flat would probably give you exactly what the recording studio and musician intended. I found fiddling with it makes me like the sound better, but also found that if I leave it flat I appreciate good music more without getting bored. So finally I think the equaliser does not give you the ability to improve the sound, but rather to exercise the option if that is your taste. You will notice that the cheaper sound systems have equalisers and settings for classical, jazz and so on whilst the most expensive sound systems usually don't even have treble and bass.

In short, just adjust them until they sound good to you. Particularly if you're not listening to the stereo at home through studio monitors carefully placed on MoPads and at ear level.
For the audiophiles, glamprecht speaks the truth. Keep in mind that sound engineers use equalizers to fix accoustic problems (hence the name "equalize"), not to enhance music after the mix. The old adage about making a "smile" with the various frequency range sliders just means you turn up the volume on the low and high frequencies. This may sound good to some people, but it leads to clipping on a lot of systems. To be fair, a more high-end system like the Logic 7 will have a built-in limiter or use compression (a soft limiter) to avoid clipping when you crank the equalizer settings. But generally, if the sound is mixed well to begin with, you'll hurt rather than help by messing with the equalizer settings after the fact. I'd only change EQ if there's a problem with the mix or with the accoustics of the car. Say, for example, road noise is drowning out the highs on your classical mix. Then slightly lower the low and mid frequencies to make the highs stand out more. Or say the guy who recorded your classic mix emphasized the bass way too much -- or not enough -- for your tastes. Then you may want to EQ to adjust to your taste. In other words, there's no magic EQ setting. Depends on the music and the environment you're playing it. Usually, leaving it flat is best. Also, when you do change EQ, you're better off turning down objectionable frequencies and increasing overall volume rather than turning up the frequencies you want to stand out. YMMV. And BTW, I like that you have a broad taste in music. :rocks:

on a related note is the logic 7 DSP only working when cinema is selected or is music also supposed to be providing a surround sound effect?

I could be wrong, but I thought the Logic 7 was always in a "surround" mode, and those DSP selections are just reverb effects that emphasize the effect.
