Pics of my new front speakers (installed)

So as some of you may have seen, I am working on installing a completely new stereo/multimedia system in my car. I already put in the flipout screen with touch screen GPS nav. and I just finished the audio side of it last night. I originally was going to do the Alpine X-type 4" components in the doors and 2 6.5" X-type midbass drivers under the seats. The midbass drivers didn't fit and a fiberglass enclosure will not work without cutting out the floor of the car for more room because there is a bar that is part of the seat assembly that is like 1cm off the top of the carpet, so anything down there can't stick up any more than the carpet level. Thankfully I can get the factory subs to play off the stock amp with the new deck and fronts installed, but I crossed them over from 80-200Htz b/c the 10W7 is at 80 and below. It just sucks because I got the JL 300.2 intending to run all that extra power to a full 3way set up in the front including the midbass drivers, but now it only runs just the front components.

Equipment installed currently:
Alpine IVAD310
Alpine NVEN872A
DEI sirius tuner
Alpine X-type components
JL Audio 300.2
JL Audio 500.1
JL Audio 10W7

Here are the pics...

Seat out, factory grill over sub.

grill off.

sub is very shallow

hole in floor with sub enclosure next to it

back of door panel with stock speaker

Had to use the Alpine grill on the outside b/c the speaker was a little too big to fit perfectly in

Cool night time shot of screen

I just have the amps sitting on the floor of the trunk now, once they are mounted and looking nice I will get some pics of them with the sub. All in all the system sounds WAY better and the front speakers slam for only being 4" speakers running off a JL 300.2

Next mod is the Alpine Bluetooth kit when it comes out in late May.

If I wanted to replace my 6.5 inch speakers under my seats what is the maximum depth allowed. Those factory drivers look under 2 inches. Any issues with changing your head unit. Thanks in advance.

Does that render the steering wheel mounted controls useless?

the total depth is only another half of an inch deeper than the speaker I was holding, so don't get a speaker deeper than that. It was actually like 8" across though, much bigger than a 6.5" speaker.

right now my steering wheel controls do not work, but with a SWIX adapter coming in a week or two, they will work with the new head unit.

Were you able to use the same bolts that hold your sats in place or did you have to replace them. Someone stated that they are meant to last one tightenening.

I'm quite sure that the SWIX won't work for the steering wheel control interface. E90's are different than any previous BMW. I haven't been able to find any compatability charts that says it'll work with the E90. Please prove me wrong as I am going aftermarket as well.

What kind of antenna adapter did you use?

I used a metra one, but I wouldn't even bother b/c I only get 1 and a half radio stations with an aftermarket deck

I am told the E90 antenna is amplified, thus an amplified adapter should be used. I just found one from Scosche called a VWA4. This should fix your problem.

So it looks like you lost all of the control buttons that are on the factory radio?
It sucks that BMW is making it harder to put aftermarket stuff in there without losing something or another

Hey,
How's the sound of the 4 inch speakers? I am willing to change my speakers too, but have not decide. BTW, let me know the adaptor if it gonna work.
Good job

Mike

T-mc-g,

Thanks for the pictures. This is the first time I've seen pics of the speakers under the seats.

Are you going to replace the rear speakers as well? If you are, any speakers in mind?

Yes 8 inch subs will fit. I took my car in last night and the head installer can gaurantee a factory looking install if the drivers are under 2.6 inches mounting depth. I have ordered kicker ssmb8's! I will post pictures in a couple of weeks.

T-MC-G......do the hookups on the factory subwoofers look like regular hookups on subs? so if i wanted to replace my subs with aftermarket all i gotta do is a real quick hookup?
