Coding a used cluster
Hello all,
I think I know the answer but wanted to check here also. My oil temp gauge stopped working. It seems that I need a new cluster to fix the issue but they are stupid expensive from BMW. From what I've found, you can not code a used cluster to a car, right? If I use one some orange light of death comes on. You can't overwrite the original VIN in a used one, or so it seems. Can anyone confirm this to be true? Also, anyone know of a different place to get a new cluster? They are about $1000 from BMW and that seems crazy. I would rather go without a oil temp gauge than pay that and have to pay to get it coded. Thanks for the help! |

You can't just code a used cluster to your car.
You can however buy a used one (eBay for example) and have some one replace the EEPROM chip, which would allow your VIN to be properly written and your mileage to be properly displayed. |

The only issue is the oil gauge?
For info there are little worm like screws behind the needle which sometimes pop out. Before you replace the cluster I'd check this first. It's a simple job to put it back. |
