So yesterday it was a nice sunny day in Toronto and I decided to give my car some love... I spent 3 hours detailing it. This morning when I went to the car to admire its shininess, I realized that there was a huge crack on the windshield. Right where the sensors are/rear view mirror. Has this ever happened to anyone?

I know it wasn't cracked before I went in because the windshield was the last thing I cleaned with a microfiber cloth.

Now I will be needing a new windshield, should I go through insurance or bmw or a generic window place? Any suggestions or locations to do it in the GTA?.. I am also open to doing it in the US if its cheaper since I am there every other week. Any advice would be great.

Id go with OEM glass and nothing else...

independent shop get a quote and work in your deductable ---> insurance make a claim ---> fix at the shop with BMW glass part from a local dealer.

Hi Vulcan,
I just had the same problem this morning. Same place, right on the rain sensor. I will schedule an appointment on my dealer and check if they can fix under warranty.

Monteiroco, I took it to a auto body/glass shop down the street for a quote that day and they told me to take it to a dealership to get it warrantied since it was a stress fracture and not impact damage.

When I took it to a dealership they picked at it with a pen and made a small dot and claimed it was impact damage... They quoted me 1700 for a new one with labour lol.

I am going to another dealership tmrw to have it looked at, make sure you don't let them pick at it!! They will do the "ballpoint pen test" but don't let them apply pressure because the glass will chip around the edges with enough pressure. I went to make a coffee since I was waiting so long and when I got back it was too late. Be super attentive and take pictures beforehand.

I think I'm screwed now and will have to pay for it, another dealership however quoted me $900. I am going to another dealership which was recommended via local bmw forum - I will let you know how it goes tomorrow.

Hey Vulcan and Monteiroco, just had the same thing happen. Was a relatively warm Melbourne day yesterday (29 Celsius - about 85 Fahrenheit) and a cooler night, though nothing extreme.

Car is a brand new (8 weeks old) X1 and is always treated like a baby! No off-road, not even dirt roads ! There were no chips or hits to the windscreen. As recommended Vulcan, have taken a photo and will keep as evidence up my sleeve ;-)

Will take it to the dealership today and see how the warranty claim goes ...

i would say this is a manufacturer defect related to the stuff glued on the inside, mirror and rain sensor.

replacing windshield's is not really a big deal anymore.

use any local glass place. your insurance should cover it (not familiar with canadian products) and i recommend local over a safelite type deal just because its good to help your local businesses out!

Just an update with this one ...

Took my 8 week old X1 with the cracked windscreen in to BMW and they said that it was a tiny stone chip right on the edge of the glass that caused it.

Replacement cost for the rain sensing version is $1200AUD. While my insurance does cover this, there is a backlog on these windscreens as it appears to be a common issue ...
