I bought a scan tool at Harbor Frieght for $40 bucks, I have never thrown a code so I took it back, been on 2 months now, if you gun the car before a quick warm up it is possible to throw a code, I let mine warm for about 1 mile before a stop on the pedal, but im almost full throttle right off the bat, you can get OBD tools on ebay for like 30 bucks, or get the BMW Bluetooth app and your smart phone becomes your OBD reader...

Turn the ignition off, and then back on. The plausibility code will clear and you'll be fine. Being able to clear it in 2 seconds at 70mph is purely a convenience thing (worth it IMO).

Yeah, I got the scan tool from Burger with my JBD, but I don't use it anymore. First, it was hard to understand because their instructions are to simply read the online forums, which are for the gasser instead of the Diesel. Once you're accustomed to it, it's easy to clear codes, but it's not easy to read them.

I got the wifi dongle and iPhone app from BMWhat. Now THATS the way to read and clear codes, plus you can do a lot of custom coding with it.

Speaking of all the power the JBD unleashes--I had the pleasure of schooling some young punks on the virtues of torque recently. As luck would have it, I found myself stopped at a traffic light behind a 370Z, and beside him in the left lane was a customized Mustang, struggling to idle. The punks were looking at each other and revving their engines for the two minutes it took for the traffic light to cycle. I knew the green light was gonna be fun.

The light turned green and the kids took off, so the old man did, too. I blew by the Z in about 50 yards, swerving in behind the Mustang. After about a quarter mile, I ate his lunch, too!

Besting the Z was no surprise, but the Mustang was. I really love this car.

yup while my car does not typically go into limp mode with JBD it does on occassion (and it is always predicatable - cold start full throttle, too much too soon etc) that said, for me, it has always been corrected by simply turning the car off then back on...and lately it has been while rolling...dont bother to pull over just find enough space while driving, kill the engine, refire and all is good

I do of course clear codes before I visit my friendly neighborhood dealership

I need that bmwhat app, what exactly do I need I have an I phone and an I pad mini, can someone tell me the other parts needed just the app I guess and the OBD sensor Blue tooth. Then I can just clear codes from it plus other features.

iOS devices don't support bluetooth OBD. You need the (larger, more expensive) WiFi version. Which if I'm not mistaken means you lose internet while connected to the dongle.

I have an iPad mini installed in the car, but use the bluetooth OBD adapter with my Note 3 instead for just this reason.

Has anyone had experience with running this in cold weather. I am planning on getting one for the x5 diesel, and temps in the winter run about -58F (-50 celsius).

It's an overpriced sensor fooler. It'll work fine in the cold... My resistor mod worked.
But with jbd don't run it above 80%. It's past the voltage that the sensor can report so it will over pressurize the rail and the pump relief will open. Open it to many times and it can have problems re sealing, causing rail pressure low issues.
I hate that jbd didn't actually test this to keep people on the safe side. A knob is stupid anyway but it gives the illusion of choice. In truth, they should have made it static to run 1800 bar max (1600 stock) and you control the rest with your foot.

There are boxes on ebay that do the same thing without a fancy bs knob for around 50 euro, used by 35d and 30d models to go from 1600 bar to 1800 bar max.

JBDs were cool 5-6 years ago.. lots have changed since JBDs came out, get you a real tune.

Definitely haven't run it that cold, but down to maybe -40F on occasion without issue. Most of our cold winter weather is between -15F and 15F. No problems at all. Of course, with that weather there's typically ice on the ground and I'm always running skinny winter tires, so I'm not digging deep into the throttle like I would in the warmer months with the wide PSS on.
