N52 High Fuel Consumption?
Hello, I’ve recently purchased a 2008 325i. It has around 133k kms, the engine runs overall smoothly but it does have a very rough cold start that feels like the car is just jerking back and forth.
I’ve had it for a month now and had to refuel 4 times (driven it for around 1400km total). Each refuel has been 55 liters. I only drive in the city and I am getting between 15.5 and 16 l/100km (15 mpg). I don’t drive aggressively either, I rarely go above 4k rpm. Is this consumption normal for these engines? What gas mileage are you guys getting on your N52? |

I get 17-20 mpg but I shift at 3k almost every time. You should scan it and see if there are any codes

I get descent gas mileage, could be better but I can't help myself. Between shifting at 3k, cruising at 2-2.5k and constantly blipping the throttle for pops.. I'll edit this with my average mpg from the last couple weeks

It seems like there aren’t any fault codes. This is very strange, I would never expect a 2.5 liter engine to consume this much fuel. My friend drives an M2 and we get the same gas mileage lol

Now, before you start looking for N52 problems, check your brakes! Seriously. I keep track of my consumption and on one of my previous cars, it jumped quickly and I couldn't explain it. When I poked around a car, I once noticed a faint smell of rear brakes. Rear caliper was sticking intermittently, so the car drove OK, but obviously had to work harder. Just a tip. |

Good tip... After a drive, touch the face of the wheel near the hub, if one is hotter than the others it is a good sign of a seized caliper or bad bearing.
I'm around 10L/100km without taking it easy. 16L is pickup truck territory. |

my long term average is 23-24. The 330i 6mt kills it on the highway though with the 3.15 final drive - that's easily 30+.
15mpg sounds really bad though. That's close to what our gas hog X5 gets! |

06 330xi w/ 170k. I stay at 25.0-25.5 mpg, per the dash.
My daily to work, which is a 83mile commute round trip. I do not let it warm up. Start and go while taking it easy. |

I saw a big jump in fuel consumption a few months ago. Checked my air filter and found that it was almost completely blocked. I have a k&n filter so just washed and reoiled it. Consumption now back to normal of about 7.8l/100km. Might be worth checking your filter and spark plugs as well.

So you have the 218hp version right? I have the same car e90 325xi automatic and I get around 14-15 l in the city and like 9-10 on the highway at 120km per hour. Do you have any codes or did you read your fuel trims? I am curious if this is normal for our cars since they are a bit heavier than normal e90 |
