Hot hatch for a weekend car?
I'm considering buying a manual 3 door golf gti with the performance packs to occasionally use to go to and from my shops and just basically thrash on my local back roads.
I have an audi a8 for the motorway commutes and though I really enjoy it and its excellent at what it was designed for, I'm wanting a car that I can really utilise its performance and find fun to drive which I feel the golf might offer. what really got me thinking of doing this is when I had my bmw and it went in for service they used to give me a bog standard manual mini which I absolutely loved driving. It was like a go kart which I enjoyed so much thrashing the little thing without doing stupid speeds or scaring myself. So do you lot think this idea will crash and burn or for the occasional fun drive this new golf gti would work? |

A hot hatch is an every day car. That's the purpose of them, performance and practicality.
For a weekend car I'd be looking for something that is only a weekend toy. Something like a VX220, Elise or a Westfield would be what I'd go for. |

A NEW Golf GTI. As a fun car? No.
Buy a kilo and a half of cocaine, 2 hookers (for the weekend) and 3 plane tickets to Ibiza. Once that weekend is out of your system, buy an MK2 GTI and then buy the missus a nice spa weekend to say sorry for the previous weekend. Pocket the £18,000 or so change. New Golf GTI = not in any way a weekend car. Not fun enough. Far too pricey! Matt |

I might try a used mini gp and see how I get along. If it doesn't work it will most likely be back into a 911 which goes against everything I was aiming to avoid.

Can't fit in vehicles like that (6"4 and 20 stone). I've owned an atom which was fantastic but looking for a fun relatively cheap weekend car. I've had five 997 two of which were gt3's but ideally I don't want to spend big money on vehicles as I'm fed up of losing £££££.
Cheap and fun is really what I'm after. |

Something old and mechanical. My little pug is no rocket ship, it rattles and squeaks but my god is it fun and involving to drive as a weekender. I'm not saying get one as you are too rich and too big. I am supporting Matt's advice on his more classic orientated suggestions.
With your coin I'd be seriously tempted to get an e30 m3. You could keep it any length of time and NEVER lose a penny. Same will probably be true of the CSL but SMG scares me. How much are boxster spyders now? Drove one of those and thought it was fantastic. |

Buy a proper classic and look after it..
1970/80s 911s are so cool right now! Lancia delta integrale? Or something really cool like a 1950s alfa / ferrari - then do the Mille milia! These cars are appreciating 20% per year!

I'm assuming you're talking about the jap civic. Heard that they are brilliant in terms of handling. Never driven one, but everyone rates them on the type r forums. The focus rs will also provide good fun with 300bhp to the front wheels! |

Ok I've seen an M3 not too far away. I'm not really up on M3's of late so this has the competition pack . I've seen some ltd edition models which are a lot more but this does seem a lot of car for the money?
Good price ? http://www.approved.bmw.co.uk/bmwuk/...tance_ASC|list |
