Newbie with 2k
Hey guys I’m new to the forum and just pick myself up a 08 335xi coupe bout a week ago. My initial reaction to the sound system was that it sounded better than the average stock system but still nothing to write home about. In my last two cars I have put aftermarket sound systems so the first thing on my list was to do the same with this one. Went into ABT to check things out and little did I know what I was getting myself into. Seems BMW uses a different whatever for their sound system so dude told me I was looking at like 6k to replace everything including putting in a head unit. I love my music and I badly need to make this system sound better. For those of you thinking there are plenty of threads on here helping with this, I’ve tried reading them but reading but I am just not getting any of it, more of a visual person. The little bit I got from the forums was that I should put mid bass under the seats and get an amp to power stock speakers? Anyways I was hoping you guys could simplify it and give me some options with what I got. (brands, part numbers, etc…)
What I got: 13 speaker system in the car I adjusted EQ settings (made it a little better) I’m having two 12” subs installed in the back w/ amp to cover the low end Last but not least I got about 2k to work with on upgrades, keep in mind that that has to cover labor too Thanks guy’s |

May want to put the brakes on the 2 12s in the trunk until you fully understand all your options.

I agree with Kaigoss, while most people getting "sound systems" refer to massive thumping bass, our BMW's have alot more intricate and specific options that work with our cars. Check the forums out and look at what people tend to work towards..I've been reading and asking questions for about 2 months trying to get my system complete..

So do you want to replace the headunit? Depending on what you want to get that will take up a good amount of your budget.
Are mainly looking for spl, sound quality, or a little of both? |

Haha thanks ctuna for all the links but like I said I don't understand a damn thing. Basically I'm looking for a crisper sound, want the bass to pop, and to be able hit that low end. And no I don't refer to sound system as obnoxious thumping haha in fact I hate that more than anything. As for the head unit I can go either way on it, I mean eventually I will but I want the sound to come first.

If you want to save $$$$ and do it correctly the first time, I suggest you take your time, re-read the (ctuna) audio thread links slowly and take these guys advice. It will not be an overnight decision.
First thing you need to find out is which BMW system you have. If you have BMW "HIFI" system, there has been many proven upgrades to this system. The E9X trunk is a bass trap and the E92 coupe door midranges location can only allow certain depth speakers. Some us prefer keeping the stock head unit and using Technic harness. Some HU can be reprogram to HiFi. As for trunk subs, I recommend the corner loaded enclosure. Some like the infinite baffle subwoofer option via the rear seat ski pass. I am willing to learn but like I said I don't retain stuff when I read, just how I am and I can't do much about it. However if I could find a knowledgable person/place around the Chicagoland area that could help me out and explain stuff to me I'm all for it. And I have the 13 speaker system so I summer that's top hifi or whatever it's called.

You should really take time to read ctuna links. If you can't retain what you read, then try reading out loud slowly 10 times. You will probably pick up something. Many non-native English forum members has come here and put in the effort to research. If there's a will there's a way. Your BMW deserves better. |
