The dealer explained how it worked when I returned my leased 325i
The Dealer has the first option to buy back at Buyout value, if not, it is sent to BMW Canada and then they allow all dealers to bid on that car. If no dealer bids something satisfactory, it goes to auction. eg: my old 325i - 2004 model returned in 2007, had 65k, Sport Package etc.., residual was $26,500, blackbook was $21k. The dealer said they could likely send it back to BMW and they re-purchase and I could had it for around $23-24k, but no guarantees and may take 3-4 weeks BMW wants to maintain residual values, so they should be willing to offer something. They lose money when they send them to auction.
