I feel exactly the same way you do. I have searched extensively on the internet and nobody has been able to figure this issue out. I still have the engine surging in reverse and in D when the steering wheel is at full lock. Really a pain in the ass when driving through heavily populated tight restaurant drives thru's. I still wonder if the MHD software is the culprit. I should remove it and see if the surge goes away. |

Did anyone ever figure this out? I still have the idle surge that is induced by steering input at idle level rpms.

I just recently updated to the latest xHP transmission map (v1.5) and haven't had the surge issue when backing up since. I hope this cured the problem, but not sure.

A BMW master technician on another forum told me this when I pm'd the symptoms and the link to this thread:
I've never had that concern on a repair order. N55s are finicky little engines. Actually a down right pain in the ass to be honest. They are notorious for idle surges ECT. I do not know a fix for it personally but I do know there are lots of action that can be taken with valvetronic faults in the car. Possibly an ecentric shaft, vtt motor harness and dme. All of those can cause that |

if this adds to the mystery I have a X5 3.5i with the N55 and my Google search about this exact issue led me here. Two issues.
When stopping at a stop light or wherever the transmission almost acts like it's going into neutral and the rpms raise a few hundred, then settle back down. Also, if I am turning the wheel at low speeds the engine will raise the rpm causing the car to lurch forward. I have seen it too where the car will raise and lower the rpm several times quickly if you have pressure on the wheel and at a stand still. I thought it was torque converter related, but when you take off it's smooth as silk.

It seems like a lot people have the same symptoms, but nobody has found a solution. Several people have been to the BMW service department with no resolve.

It happens to me when the car has been parked for longer than two nights and I start the engine and immediately drive off. So it does happens but it was never a "problem" per se. The surging stops after the engine has warmed up and the car has driven a few minutes at moderate speeds (30mph+)
Could only see where this would be a concern IF the engine surge is accompanied by a simultaneous and temporarily non-working brake pedal as it does on the new 340i F30 vehicles.

My 2011 e92 335i AT does the same... engine surges as turning (backward or forward) out of a parking spot with steering wheel fully turn-locked. I went through the entire thread...
I'm trying the 3rd option since I have the cable and MHD tune and app. Only way to adjust to it is not to let your foot off the brake completely as your turn or let it finishes surging then resume your turning process lol. |

I think a quick recall on DME update for all affected N55 engine should keep some BMW owners happy.

I am starting to wonder if there is an issue with the power steering pump that is causing this problem. Is there a switch in the PS system that elevates rpms when you turn the steering past a certain point?

So I had tried resetting the adaptations after cold start is disabled (except VANOS and HPFP, battery registery, throttle) using MHD app, sort of improved a little. Maybe it's just my mind's playing tricks on me... |

Is anyone else having the surge issue and using the xHP flash on their car? I have the Stage 3 version in my car, and after the last update on the app, I no longer have the issue in my car.

No improvement with v1.5
I guess you just have to step on brake when the surge starts while turning, make sure RPM is stable then slowly let off the brake. |
