Idiot- put petrol in the diesel

Just had the car serviced with all new filters and everything.

On the same day, i went to the pretol station and put in about £6 worth of petrol before i realised what I was doing. Stopped. Tank was pretty much empty being freeezing outside and late at night, decided to full tank it with diesel and drive it.

Didnt seem to notice any real difference. I'm still on the same tank of fuel but have had the engine fault light come on twice, but goes after I restart the car.

Assuming this will go after all the current fuel is burnt or goes the car need to go to the garage? Car seems to be driving ok.

I'd keep the tank maxed on diesel and hope for the best. However you've put nearly a gallon (?) of petrol in which is not going to do the pumps etc any good.

Fault could be unrelated, need to read the codes.

Add some 2 stroke oil in to help lubricate the pump and injectors. A quick Google will tell you how much to add. Many people do this regularly to keep the system running nicely.

I survived it with much more petrol than that, i put about £20 petrol into a near empty tank and didn’t realise until i left the forecourt onto a busy roundabout, i managed to keep it driving for about 5 miles to the next garage and brimmed it while it was still running. Within a minute it was running normally but with a bit of black smoke. I topped it up frequently till i had used about half a tank then let it run low and refilled it, i count myself very lucky to have got away with it.

As said above, put 2 stroke oil in it. Low ash preferably, I would stick 500-1000ml in there.

I’ve heard it said that a bit of petrol in a diesel occasionally is a good thing for cleaning injectors but I’ve never been brave enough to try it.
As you’ve tried it for me do you think your car is running any differently now or no different?

not sure about that but who knows.

If im honest, it feels a little stronger in the pull - but thats probably just in my head as had a full service in my head.

I did note a slight drop in power while it had the petrol in and i did have a warning light come on once saying reduced power... but never again.
