Question Shifter bushings question

Due a snafu from ECS the shifter arm bushings are undersized. So while I wait to see if they find a properly sized set, I'm wondering if the OEM ones can be easily be pushed in. What I will likely need to do is get the the ECS ones out - v. easy since they are 2-piece for ea bushing - and try to slide the rubber 1 piece OEM ones in (part 2 in diagram). All with the car on the lift and w/o removing anything else like the shifter ball bearing (7).

When I removed the old OEM shifter bushings, they were a bit hard to get out, and this was with the arm removed from the car, with it on it will harder but I've never done it before, hence my question.

You should be able to use your hands or, worst case, some channel locks, to squeeze those OEM bushings in. You won't need a press or anything special.

Wasn't expecting a press really but given the tight space with everything on the car not sure if the force needed can be applied basically by hand only.

When I did my E46 M3 I had the carrier out of the car and on a bench. I still don't think it will be too difficult to do by hand.

If I remember correctly they are rubber and rather soft so it shouldn't be bad. It is extremely easy to remove the shifter arm, so even if it's difficult with the car in, you can just remove it.

edit: I guess when I removed it I had the driveshaft and exhaust out, so not sure how much they would interfere.

OK, thanks. I assume the bushing part #'s are the same ?

Yes, it is rubber but since I've never seen/felt a new one firsthand I only know that the my used one had to be pried out using a screwdriver and moderate force. Easy with the carrier arm off, but if it would've been on the car... def not so easy.

It's easy to get the carrier arm off if you remove the bearing #7 again, which (1) I don't want to replace yet again and (2) causes the rubber boot #8 to be removed again, and which is next to impossible to fully fit back on the carrier arm with the exhaust+shaft in place (when I did my SSK I did could not snap it back on to the carrier)

DaanBMW Any update on this install? I just did a shifter + bearing replacement, so I'm wondering if these carrier bushings can be installed easily and/or without removing the arm.

Yes, confirm this can be done without removing the whole carrier. Not easily, but you push carrier end up (if I recall correctly...), then push old bushings out (easy) and new ones in (a bit trickier)

I am having an absolute devil of a time getting these into my shifter carrier. So much so that I wound up cracking the carrier and am going to have to get a replacement. Anyone have any tips? Perhaps I didn't clean mine well enough.

Why not fit these bushings? They're in two halves, so easy to install...

Combination of being a little worried about NVH and more immediate availability of the OE version. I thought about doing the powerflex urethane carrier bushing but I recall reading somewhere some concerns about gear whine etc.

I may eventually switch to AKG delrin bushings + their DSSR if I don't like how my rebuilt shifter feels.
