Car went in for CIC update now its dead!

My car is currently with BMW I asked them to update the firmware on my CIC because it doesn't have the tick or the i in the circle and I want to update my maps to 7 digit postcode and 3D so it needs the update first.
Anyway, the update has failed and BMW cant communicate with my car I'm sure they will be able to eventually but they have suggested it may need a new control module somewhere and I have no idea of timescale or in fact cost now! I asked if they have only done the CIC to which they replied no so literally nothing on my car works! BMW Said if they do an update they have to update every single module in the car is that correct? I've also never heard of an update failing is this common or am I just very unlucky, if anyone else's update has failed how was it resolved?

sometime cic can die during software upgrade
using bmw recomended procedure dealer software can only update whole car
look for any individual bmw electric shop and they knew how to fix such cic

Will they be able to update the rest of the car to get it running again if it is the CIC thats died so I can then send that off to get fixed, or does it need a working CIC first?

they should have possibility to communicate with car without cic
car can easily be driven without headunit

Thats good to hear, thank you. Hopefully they can get my car running tomorrow then, the service people told me my car wouldn't do anything at all earlier today.

The dealer should pay for a new CIC since they messed it up. If you can't get a new CIC from the dealer I can send out a patched unit for $350. PNP pre coded for your car.

I think there get out of jail card for this is that I asked them to do the update. But if they cant fix it, then my plan is to upgrade to cic pro, I have the business version at the moment with the narrow screen.

they will tell you upfront that there is a risk, and that they do not recommend it.

they will tell him that he was made aware of the risk and then not assume any liability.

a smart SA would even have him sign the work order with this clearly printed on it.

UK car.

There should be zero risk if you are a dealer to flash a module. The dealer techs do not know what they are doing and should pay for a new CIC.

After speaking with an independent BMW specialist, it appears they have a lot more knowledge with this kind of thing. The only reason I went to the main dealer is they had my car for a recall so I asked them to update it whilst they had it and I have a courtesy car.

I wasn't aware however that it could go to the point that my car wont respond to anything, I thought they were updating the idrive and associated modules not every single module in the car. I still haven't heard from them yet today (they have been open nearly 3 hours) I know they have other customers but I have no idea of the state of my car and im really panicking at the moment.

Panic over, I got a call this afternoon. They did a battery reset (im not sure what that is, other than a guess of disconnecting the battery.) left everything to rest last night and when they tried again this morning with a different computer all the modules started coming back online and the update has been successful. My car would have been okay if it had been updated periodically but because its never had an update, the latest update was a bit of a shock to the system. I am so relieved to have my car back now and everything is working. My BMW dealer was very good, the tech that was working on it has been working hard to get it sorted.

Can you tell me if it's worth it ? Which new functionalities your car got ? I am not sure if I want an update on FW or not. Still thinking about it.

New functionality on a old platform as the e90?

I suspect this isn't the real story....

a full I-level update is great idea (the car will be much better afterwards) and BMs method is by far the best way to update, as every ecu / computer / module etc. fitted in the car receives the latest fully compatible software

did you have the car from new? the most likely cause of a total crash when doing an integration update is a toy (module or feature ) added outside the approved and licenced BMW network

they aren't trained to do this step and its what causes the issue with non standard vehicles - they should do a quick test of the toy count that it was built with (or officially paid to have added as retrofit toys that were registered with germany) versus the actual list of toys now in the car. If there's no match don't press the go button as it will always fail and crash out leaving the vehicle dead !!!

if the list germany have is the same as the car physically has 3.5 hours later you get a better car back.... if the list doesn't match when they send all the data at the car as stuff starts updating all is good until it comes across a non registered module and it gives up (potentially leaving modules fried part way in an unrecoverable state). If you are lucky and it sounds like you were, once they find and disconnect the illegal extra and or add it to the official list of toys the car is supposed to have, programming can not complete successfully

NOTE: any module can die in programming at anytime, (just like it can die in use or parked up over night) whilst its unlikely on a good car, you will find it far more likely on an old wreck at the end of its life

I just purchased an E91 recently.

I work at a dealership and took it in to have the car updated so I can keep my navigation current.

Well, they were updating it and the CIC module crashed. I would have been fine had not one of the previous owners decide to use their skill or lack thereof coding the car.

It cost me about 2500 dollars to right all the problems.

My bad for buying the car in that state, but a lesson learned.

the dealer stitched you up.

don't ever think they know what they are doing

I expect it was the very point I made above... and or someone turned on something like internet services so to get you back they made you needlessly buy a new CIC unit

On the latest systems some release notes for ista-p I read mid LY, specifically state on the latest modules they design the software to blow the brains out of modules if its had non license features enabled - ( guess NBT or newer)
