I have seen this problem before but not sure where. I think it is a common problem to 07 models.

I believe you need to go to the dealer to fix the issue, same thing happened to my friend's 07 and they had to have it towed to bmw. Hopefully someone chimes in with a fix.

You don't need to go to the dealer. Do you have a BT cable? If you do I can send you the file you need to fix this.

This is a common issue with earlier models, most people take the car to the dealer and they replace the steering column but you absolutely do not need to. I've had this happen to my personal E92 twice now when the battery dies.

If you don't have a BT tool, you can buy the $179 version here:

Do you know why it happens only when the battery dies?

The wheel lock assembly gets caught in transition when the battery is low. The physical lock is stuck in the between locked & unlocked which is a common occurrence with low power situations like battery failure. In my case the wheel was never actually locked but the car wouldn't turn on either way.

If your steering column is in fact defective, you can repair it (there's a how to on the forums) by lubing the lock assembly after you rip out half the dash.

The first time I had this fixed personally was right after my battery died. Warranty covered it and they replaced the column, second time it happened was after the battery went dead from the car sitting over the winter. Coincidentally this problem always happened to me when the battery was dead.

You can also do this with an INPA K+DCAN cable. I sent the Tools32 command to DR Euro a few months back when another car had the same issue sitting in a parking lot.

More than likely the electronic lock in the column is not bad and just needs to be reset. I'm sure the BT cable can do this as well, but I've only seen this done with Tools32 using an INPA cable. I'm looking for the command. I need to keep this $#!* more organized... I'll post it as soon as I find it.
