No idea how but my 2009 E90 had rust spots under where the rubber wire conduit attaches to the trunk lid.

On my 2011, I noticed some surface rust on the trunk support struts, which I also thought was odd (fortunately I can just replace those). I'm guessing it might have been due to leaf build up from the previous owner not being cleaned out.

I'm also planning to go over the entire car before the winter, removing some panels to thoroughly clean and then wax those areas (like the cowl trim under the windshield). I'm still debating taking the vapor barriers off the doors to check and possibly clean inside after seeing pine needs/leaves fall into the doors where the windows meet.
