Intake is off and there are parts rattling around inside it
Hi Fellas, I took my intake off to replace the starter. There is something rattling around inside of it and one piece fell out which appears to be some sort of rod that is a few inches long. There is another part or maybe parts still in there. Any ideas what it may be and how to fix it?

That's your DISA valve

Yup...I took it off and the flapper was bouncing around in there. And the rod that fell out was for the flapper on the valve.
So now my question is do I replace just the broken one or both? My manifold has two of them. 11617579114 - this one is broken (larger) 11617560538 - this one seems fine (smaller) |

https://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1487109 or Depends on the age/mileage of the DISAs, the small DISA is more complicated to be taken out than the large DISA, also need to get new intake manifold gasket etc. If the age/mileage is low, I wouldn't bother with the small DISA. But I assume the small is just as old as the large. https://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1630107

I went ahead and replaced both DISA valves. I can’t believe how much better the car runs. The small disa was stuck open and the large was totally broken. Smooth idle all the time now, no staggering or hesitation when accelerating and my mpg is back where it used to be.
