Question Car Tax VED ramblings

Not sure if this question should be O/T - sorry if it should, but I think its relevant to bmw ownership

I picked up my 335i last May (07) and the month prior Gordon the brown decided to up Band G cars to £400 notes (not sure if he created this new band) for cars built after March 2006.

Now as my 335i was built early 07 that means it is 227g co2 just after the cusp of the banding, @ 225g my question is related to future increases in VED.....

if that twat (acutally its not Gordon anymore is it? oh well still applies) decides to increase VED in the next budget to £1000+ maybe £2000 where do you think us drivers with band G cars will fair?

I cannot imagine (acutally with labour I can) the gov. being able to say - now all you with band G cars please pay 2K, surely they have to give notice and state something along the lines of "all cars manufactured after 2010 in band G will have to pay 2k" Otherwise I expect a cheque from the Govt to equate for the monumental deprication i will have to absorb..

wonder what gases will govs. move onto after CO2 from cars (1% of uk output) after all money has been made?

Thoughts?

PS if you think the banding is pathetic (i do - its about $ after all) take a look at this (info from a poster at pistonheads)

Porsche Cayman 2.7 5 speed 224 CO2's - Band F
Porsche Cayman 2.7 6 Speed 227 CO2's - Band G

This made me laugh too (as its true)

FACT- If I earn a decent wage, run a nice car and own my own property Labour will TAX TAX TAX. It happened with the last labour government.

FACT- If I choose not to work, live off the state, breed like a rabbit I will receive handsome sums of money in benefit and housing for my trouble

sorry last bit has gone AWOL and a bit OT - well its a Sunday morning rant

If you want my opinion, I think there is a lot of scare mongering going on at the moment. It would take a stupid and very naive Chancellor (or PM - see Scooba comment above!) to raise VED on Band G to £1000+. The motorist has been hit hard with fuel rises already and the Govt have reaped the fiscal rewards of that. The motorist has been exploited and financially raped by this Govt over the last ten years, often using the environmental cause as the reason. There is little appetite, I believe, to extend this to punitive VED rates at the moment, unless of course you ask the environmentalist lobby groups. What is probably more likely is another band - 'H' which covers vehicles which push out, say 300gm/km, which would hit very expensive, and big, cars. If you ask me, manufucaturers are doing there bit, BMW a good case study, in terms of developing more economical and less polluting engines. This should be further encouraged and incentivised by the EU and the the National Govt.

Having said that I for one would not be buying a large 4x4 (GL Merc) if I had to pay VED!

Agree, Shells profits are a smokescreen, very convenient for the Govt. As you say fuel is 70% odd tax. If we are to get angry it should be with this Socialist Govt. We should all benefit from Shells enormous profits. Most of the UK shareholders will be corporate financial bodies which are investing money from pensions etc. Talk of a windfall tax is ridiculous and it would be a huge nail in the coffin for this Govt (probably not a bad thing then!) and would hugely discredit the UK financial markets.

Peter - I agree on a new banding, was thinking that they would create a band H @ 300g/km. I guess this is to allow for the M3 @ 295

For those of us in London - Lets hope the buffoon boris gets in for London mayor, hes better than Ken and that says it all. He once alluded to wanting to drive an M3 in London - so that gets my vote

I'm gonna make myself unpopular here......

I'm not a fan of our tax-happy government at all, least of all Brown, BUT...how else do you encourage people to pick more sensible cars?

I'm really not in favour of more fuel duty (the other way) as you can't avoid paying it although it does take usage into consideration. At least with VED, you have a choice you can choose a car that has a better banding, which is what we need people to do. Truth is, the car companies will react anyway and start to produce the cars that we want at lower banding. e.g. more ED cars.

Too many people don't think about the CO2 performance of their cars, this is a way to at least make them aware of it.

Yes it means that some cars will depreciate more and that's unfortunate. But can you think of another way?

I also don't think he'll do anything daft like raise the £400 to £1000, what he might do it say that he higher bands will increase at a higher than inflation rate from now on (say 10%) giving the market and people time to react to a predicable change.

I generally agree with you. But looking at that list of Band G cars there are some average 'run of the mill' cars in there mixed in amoungst the exoctica. It is not right that they are all lumped together. A higher band at 300gm/km will seperate out the truly outrageous polluters, and to be frank those that can afford to buy them will not be bothered by paying very high VED.

fair point, but on the whole Cars emit Co2 levels akin to pissing in the ocean. 1% of Uk total I am led to believe. Its farting cattle, air traval and industry thats the concern. - Mind you this is stuff I have read in cars mags

so why single out the motorist? what about my company who leaves 100's of servers powered on etc etc

Diesels emit dangerous gases such as No2 that acutally kill you quicker (if you want to kill yourself - use diesel fumes )

Anyone see the great global warming swindle program last year on Channel 4. that was a real eye opener.

the thing that bugs me is that the government will still be driven around in high output bmws.mercs etc and will not set an example.

I enjoy driving its a hobbie too, and ppl lile Gordon brown hate cars and don't have a licence.

If massive increases in VED are to come, then it will only be fair if we have time to adjust, ie like 3 years notice on NEW cars - not old ones

dont even get my started on the myths of hybrids too!!! anyone who buys a prius is a victim of marketing

Yeah, that does make sense, a band for the "daft" cars that costs a lot. It would at least stop normal people buying some of the worst cars, gets my vote

Hmmm I don't think so, I think road based transport is more like 20%, so it is significant (but not the only cause of course, just an easy target)

Fair point, it should be phased, hence the idea of raising it in a predicable amount for the next X years, give people time to adjust.

Hybrids are a load of nonsense, old red Ken letting them in for free, when the 400h is about as bad a polluter as possible, but then, he's a moron!

Read this thread with interest and agree 100%. dazzapb, you are quite right, it is farting cattle etc. methane that is the real problem. One power station alone daily emits more Co2 than virtually all the internal combustion engines in the whole of the UK emit in one year. (Official govt. figures). But oh, we all need electricity and can't upset the 'big boys' of industry, so tax the motorist. Millions of us pay a bit more here and there and it soon adds up for govt. coffers.

I really do not understand the hybrid issue either. The cost in 'pollution' of producing all those batteries beggars belief, then there is the electricity to re-charge said batteries. No doubt someone in the 'green' brigade would argue the reduced Co2 emissions off-set all this - bollocks IMO.

thanks the prius is made in Japan and has to be shipped 5000 miles to europe/US, the co2 produced in transportation is equalivent to driving a Mondeo for 20k miles. Can't remember where i read this, think it was in Top gear mag, just after the bashing they gave the NCAP exempt deathtrap of the g-whizz (Ken's favorite car - i mean quadricycle )

Driving in town is economical but take it on a Motorway and the weight of the battery increases comsumption once the engine has to kick in.

each to their own, but it is a illusion to state that a prius is any better than a polo bluemotion or 120d. The moniker hybrid, conjures up images of bunny rabbits and tree hugging to some.

If Gordon Brown or whichever Labour moron/expert decides that the VED banding on my 227g of CO2 polluting 335i deserves a £2000 duty charge per year, when the Lexus 400H hybrid pays sod all, I will personally be asking PeterG if I can borrow his day-job transport so I can make good use of the big red button marked FIRE MISSILE...
