The chap means that the diesel straight sixes are aurally, a bit pathetic, whereas the petrol straight six sounds glorious. I'm inclined to agree. It says nothing about how dynamically proficient the 330d/335d is once you're driving it, simply that at idle, like all diesels, it's a bit "dagga dagga"

The way he said they acted meant they really had no clue about performance diesels. Otherwise once they heard it was a denzil they would be intrigued to what variant.

The thing about the 6 pot denzils is that they go from sounding awful at tick over to really good on song. So yeah, if you're not into cars, just hearing one sitting there would give the totally wrong impression!

If that makes sense ie I get used to mine and do like it, then I go in a fast petrol and my diesel sounds like a bag of spanners.

I know what you mean but for me, even after being scared sh*less in my mates rs4 I'm never disappointed when I get back into my 330d.
I actually read a review of the 245 330d that said it sounded like a 1960s Ferrari! It doesn't, but for someone to even think that for a second it has to sound pretty good. Defo not saying is sounds as good as the petrol but IMO the denzil sounds good enough to satisfy that element of my love of cars!

No doubt the 330d is an awesome everyday weapon. But for me it does not scratch my itch for a fast petrol, it's just not as involving.
if I had got that 330i instead, I reckon I would now be wanting for a 330d and it's torque / mpg

A Porsche also has a flat six - and it sounds 10x better than the 330i - so it isn't as glorious as it's made out to be and could be much better.
The 'd's diesel clatter is quite harsh but in todays day and age, it's hardly something worth considering when checking the 'like' or 'dislike' boxes. |

Why is it that every thread that talks about how nice the petrol engines sound ends up being full of diesel drivers talking about how great their cars are?? Relax derv people, you have made a good decision and you have nice, fast, economic cars. Let petrol heads amuse themselves. You have nothing to prove. |

agreed! in an ideal world were pertol/diesel was 80p a litre id have a 335i anyday over my remapped 330d. Still wouldnt have a 330i though, too slow. Great car but crap residuals after 3 years.

Where do you stand if you have a petrol and a diesel car?!
I think the 30d/35d unit sounds good when pushed - good but not great. Yes the petrol sounds better but that's usually because petrol drivers are having to rag the nuts of their cars to keep up with a lazily driven diesel... Tee hee... |

Personally it's the overall sound for me and performance when were talking in the bigger leagues of the 335i vs 335d which is why i'm buying a 335i next year. Probably also the fact I dont care much about petrol prices as I cover a short distance per year. |

My petrol car is slightly faster than my diesel (about 3 seconds faster to 60) But returns 20mpg at most. The denzel double that in similar conditions.
Depends on my mood really and if need to cart more than 2 people Soundwise - not that fussed. I've usually got the stereo on loud |

Revs: It's nice to rev the nuts off a car every now and then...but realistically, how often are petrol car drivers going to red line their motors? The 3.0 bmw diesel engines aren't very dissimilar to a petrol car (in manual mode) in the way they rev. They hold their revs well and have allot of push as you near to the limiter. Vibration: I guess it depends on how well the car is insulated. The 730d/A8 TDi/S320 CDI etc have no signs of diesel vibrations - because of the nature of the car and the fact the they're better insulated. responsiveness: It's all about the right gear my friend. Weight: Diesel engines are generally heavier - but if that weight is added to a good chassis, like the 3 series - then the difference is negligible when it comes to performance. |
