Welp, I guess we can say that this is a normal N55 sound, then!

I have the same noise.

It's just the sound of the injectors firing. Nothing to worry about.

Sorry for reviving an old thread. I wanted to check and see if your sound ever went away or if it did eventually turn into to something worse? My car has recently started making almost the exact same sound and I'm starting to drive me self crazy with it. Doesn't matter if the car is cold or warm it will make that sounds and it comes and goes with no rhyme or reason.

Thanks,
Garavion

Hey, it's still the same and car is doing very well. Mine goes away after cold start.

test drive

I looked at a 2013 X5 35i with the N55, and at cold start up, it had a light knocking sound. But it went away after 2 minutes or so.
It doesnt sounds like valve or lifters. It sounds more in front of the engine.. Not from the top for sure.

The X5 has 94k miles. 1 owner car, so the owner just bailed on it. haha
Wondering if this is anything major or not.. It's such a clean X5 too!!

if anyone knows, please reply. thanks-

Let it warm up, rev to around 1800 RPM and see if you still hear a knocking - if so, it could be rod knock. Also check the oil filter for any visible metal shavings

I have knock in front of the M57Y engine.
More prominent on the cold start, sometimes when warm at idle.
No metal shaving of any kind in the oil filter.
Stethoscope suggests that the noise is coming from injector #1.

Started about 2+ years ago at 70K miles, today 87K miles.
I assume if mine would of been rod knock the engine would of failed by now

good idea I heard a bad "rod bearing" on youtube. It sounds a bit more like a "shaking knock" rather than a plain "singular knock"... if that makes sense. The noise I heard on the X5 that I looked at was more of a singular knock.

Stethoscopes are a great way to identify a source of noise. I have done it.. I located a bad injector on my old 97 camaro. I replaced the injector and my random misfire code went away permanently. I was impressed I actually fixed it! but when my camaro injector failed, it stopped "Clicking" or "ticking". I have never heard one "knock". The sound you hear from injector #1 could be a noise that is "near" the injector. Like worst case, it could be the #1 valve. or rocker arm if your BMW has a rocker arm. I have no idea. But my thought is that "noise can travel" from 1 component to another. So that Stethoscope my be picking up noise from an adjacent part near the injector. And it could be internal so you may not be able to put a Stethoscope on it.
