LoL.
Man, sorry to hear that.
Car was supposed to bring enjoyment but it make my head spin.
It sound better than before but still it doesn't sound as good as when I did the test drive.(may be I wasn't paying much attention or the surrounding was too noisy to take note of it).
It still has this annoying sound in the background..tick,click...dont know how to say it.

Have a listen to the sound when you have the time.

Anyone else would like to comment please do so....much appreciated.

I think what the ticking that we're talking about sounds like this:

and this:

I watched your youtube post and listened, doesn't sound like it's the same. But anyways, my 08' 328 has this or had the tapping/ticking sound, but ever since i started driving it regularly to work (20 miles one way) the noise has been gone. Even when i first start her up in the morning. I'm sure it'll come back as soon as i let her sit for a day or two, but the noise disappears as soon as she's warmed up and the oil has pumped up the lifters. It's the lifters bleeding down when the car sits for a while that's what the shop foreman at the dealer told me. It's definitely not normal, but i don't really want to replace the head. I'm just going to keep driving it for now...we'll see

Thanks for showing me the video. Mine doesn't sound so loud.
The tick that I heard in the back ground does sound similar. (May be my engine is in the process of becoming like that).
But I do find the engine sound rough. Let me put on some mileage in the car and see how it goes. thanks

ticking

Got my car back after the replaced everything form the block up.
I now have 800km on the car. I don't drive it much so the job has been done for 5 weeks.
the engine runs great but I did notice the car uses about 20% less fuel than before?
does anyone know if it was a software upgrade or that the car was fighting its self that caused the fuel issue?
the car used to use 11.2 l for every 100km now it 8.9-9l for every 100km. same gas same drive everything is the same
I don't drive the car like a little old lady now

I had this issue before, usually it was a cold start but lately as this post mentions, I don't hear it anymore so it might be the oil level. I last had it changed last month.

I would give it a fill up or two before you come to any conclusions... Im not saying i dont believe you, but its highly unlikely from changing the head that it would lead to any significant fuel economy, and youre saving a LOT.

Give it another tank or two then post up again and lemme know, let everyone know. Because if thats the case, and its saving you THAT much fuel, ill be bringing my car in and getting the same procedure done!

Im gettting 1oo/8.3 since i got the car and averaging about 43o k a half tank.

430 km a half tank is about 268 miles for 8 gallons. That is excellent fuel efficiency.

I get about 22 - 23 mpg all city, about 27 - 28 mpg mixed. The best I have gotten is 34 mpg all highway.

That is NOT normal. Way too loud. My car has this ticking/tapping sound but nothing like yours. Take it back to your dealer and demand they fix it.

i have sent them the video/audio file. they are just waiting on the Puma case to decide next course of action. I have read all of 35 pages of this thread & it is just annoying that our cars have this issue.

I'm totally with you man. I too have a PUMA case open but i don't really want the head replaced. If I drive it regularly not a single tick, but as soon as she sits for a day or two, that tapping is back. But on your car, it sounds really bad compared to mine. The shop foreman told me that it's a known problem by BMW but they haven't really addressed the issue .

LoL, don... i know exactly what you mean, thats when I notice mine ticking (the drive thru deal) I dont use drive thru often which is why I probably didnt notice the ticking until a lil later than most people would.

but man, is it ever annoying to have to listen to this shit... but its a delicate balance between living with it, or letting the dealership touch it (fix it) but end up scratching my paint or fucking something else up.

Ive been posting on this thread on and off since I received my ticking at 4000 miles about 17 months ago. I took our 325in Friday for the routine oil change and told the SA about the ticking and how it had increased in frequency. Well, thankfully this time it ticked when the car was in service. I received a phone call that they were going to replace the head this coming Wednesday. Since the head is a major component of the engine, do you know if I should ask for an extended warranty on the engine itself? Is this possible? Ive still got about 31,000 miles and 27 months of the original warranty left, but by opening the engine up, it does create a better chance of other problems developing in the future.

so we hadnt driven our z4 coupe. Has the 3.0 n52 motor in it in a few days.

Car is only a month and a half old been in the states two months with 3100 miles on it

Started it up today to drive it and heard the same ticking noise but it was extremely loud. Drove it around the parking lot for a few minutes to allow it to warm up a little and it was still there. Increasing with the rev's of the motor.

We decided to take my e46 instead as we dont want the motor blowing if it is a bent valve or bad lifter.

Came home a little while ago and being the car people we are wanted to try and figure more out about it before going to the dealer. I started the car back up and let it run for a few minutes. The sound seems to be coming from cylinder 2 and after getting to operating temperature it was just as loud but the cams started rattling more so as the car warmed up

Also the oil level says it is good and the coolant level seems to be low

I got my car back after 12 days at the stealership. They opened a PUMA case 2 days after I dropped her off and to my surprise, the cylinder heads were in stock. They got the head in and replaced it. I've driven about 10 miles since and haven't heard the ticking. I checked my invoice against the parts list posted by jcrwu and found that my list is shorter (could possibly be b/c mine is a 328i and jcrwu has a 330i). Anyway, heres the list of parts on my invoice:

(1) 11-12-1-557-208 CYLINDER HEAD WITH VALVE
(1) 11-12-7-548-799 SET BOLT CYLINDER HEAD
(1) 11-12-0-392-547 SET OF ALU. SCREWS
(3) 11-12-7-521-167 ASA-STUD BOLT
(2) 11-36-7-524-954 COLLAR SCREW
(1) 11-12-7-555-757 CYLINDER HEAD GASKET
(1) 11-12-7-548-921 GASKET SET CYLINDER HEAD
(2) 11-12-7-529-997 TORX SCREW
(2) 13-62-7-530-413 TORX SCREW
(1) 11-42-7-566-327 SET OIL FILTER
(7) 07-51-0-017-866 OIL 5W30 SYNTHETIC
(1) 82-14-1-467-704 ANTIFREEZE
(1) 11-12-0-409-288 SET OF ALU. SCREWS

They did change the oil and my SA told me that I do not have to worry about an oil change for another 12 months or 15,000 miles but I guess they didn't reset the service reminder which shows 1600 miles to go.

Keep us updated man. Did they show/tell you what was new with the head that they put on? ...i'm going to call for my 3rd appointment tomorrow. I haven't heard it in a while, but she sat over the weekend and when I fired her up this morning, it was back. Seemed louder too.

Yeah, the service tech that my SA called upon seemed quite knowledgeable about the whole issue. As I mentioned in one of my previous posts, he didn't even ask me to fire up the engine to hear the noise after I showed him a video on my cell phone that I had taken a few days before I took my car in the 2nd time. He told me that it was a known issue and they had replaced a few heads already. He mentioned that the difference between the old and new heads was that the new heads had smaller drain holes that would keep oil up there longer for lubrication and this would keep the valve lifters well lubricated and noiseless.

Interesting. Well i'm dropping the car off on Monday, it's the only time they'll have a loaner. This is just such an inconvenience, I just hope they fix it right this time. I could decide to just let this go, but like somebody said, it's freakin embarrassing pulling up to somebody and they look over and hear that tap-tap-tap-tap. It's possible that the tapping won't do anything bad that will affect the valvetrain, but it's just unacceptable for a $40k car.

That sounds right. hyrdraulic lifters in this day in age shouldn't experience problems such as this.

I agree, it certainly is unacceptable for the price paid and its a shame that the SIB that is available doesn't fix the issue.

If your SA and/or tech hear(s) the ticking noise, they will talk to BMW NA to open up a PUMA case. If they do this, be prepared to be without your car for about a week or two. When I dropped my car off, I went in at 7:30 AM so I can get a BMW loaner. If I had scheduled for a later appointment, they would have given me a blue PT Cruiser from Enterprise, lol.

talked to the dealership yesterday about the ticking noise and the SA was basically saying they wont do much of anything about it and it is a known thing on these motors.

He also told me i can bring it in for them to check but if they decide its the regular noise the motors make they will charge me for the labor of checking it out.

I guess i'll just have my friend from work take a look at it and get his opinion, i honestly trust him more than the dealership at this point
