I have not got the paddle shifters working yet. I’m waiting to get a DCT M3 steering wheel before I wire them in. Trying to limit the amount of times I have to get under the dash lol.

Question: what trans option should I check on MHD? I’m just running an OTS tune right now. It feels like I’m getting some throttle closures at WOT not present before the swap. Rail pressure is fine. Should I let the DME mess with torque if I’m on the stock TCU tune? Maybe it’s something with the gearing that makes the car feel like it’s down on power in the higher gears.

I mean not to overlook your question. The ptcan code is annoying me too. I’ll let you know if I find a fix.

I also hit a “torque” limiter depending on the gear, i’m single turbo with custom tune tho. so i’m not sure i just have xhp tuned auto selected in mhd + custom tune. The torque correction is WAY off tho i think and i’ll get throttle closures when WOT in 5-6-7-8 any long gears.

Okay good that we’re in the same boat. It seems that the trans is happier rowing through the lower gears accelerating than through the higher gears (5,6,7) at speed. It makes sense that this has something to do with torque simulation. Are you on the stock TCU tune? I wonder how we can improve the torque simulation.

Honestly not sure tune wise, I’ve tried flashing xhp but it’s almost like the trans doesn’t properly store the flash or something, it’ll save some options and other things it won’t. it’s weird

Have you tried going through Sutphin? He makes custom tunes through xHP

I'm planning this swap now on a 128. Any issues with the trans mount? I assume the rear bracket from the 8HP45 mates to the 6HP cross brace?

I used the stock atc300 t case with the factory trans mount. I’m haven’t done much research on 1ers.

Oh, right...duh. Keeping the xfr case keeps the rear mount.

admiring the job done

Absolutely wonderful "wiki" thread you wrote.
I am going , even though a bit scared, to do the same with an E83 car, considered the platform it's the same at th end of story.
sent some small message months ago with Kenneth, and it's doable.
I will like to know if any update with the gears showed happen.
some gears lever hole photo might be useful either..

Obviously, we need a video on downshifting !

very very Well done

Thanks for the feedback man—good luck on the x1 project. So far I have not gotten the dash to correctly display gear. Someone in the CANTCU Facebook group directed me to some coding that seems like the fix I’m searching for— see attachment. Right now, I’m reverting back to the e9x stock trans cooler set up. My AM t stat/Rad keeps the trans too cool for my liking. Will soon be flashing the trans with XHP— Kenneth said that should fix my torque limiter problem. A buddy is also testing out a new CANTCU logic that should take care of the PT-CAN issues. Things are coming together…finishing a project is always the longest step.

@cmbe92guy could you please email me. I own a 2011 335i xdrive. I have a 6 speed automatic that is not in the best shape. I have a spare 535i 2013(I think) xdrive 8 speed automatic transmission. Could I use the steps you used? Please email me @ejlew3221@gmail.com. Thank you.

Love this idea! How did driveshaft go? Did you have to go custom?

The Canformance wiki page (google it) has a step-by-step guide for CANTCU installation. Removal/install of the transmission can be found on YouTube.

Hey cmbe92,

So long story short, my 6hp decided to die on me after just about a month after my fluid change,
I'm also thinking about the 8hp Swap, just wondering if you ever considered a 8hp from a E84 chassis.
Maybe that could work without the need for adaption of the TCU to the DME.
any suggestions?

Ive been thinking about this for my 335i. I'm actually interested in doing it to my N51 car, but I still have warranty.

That has been done before but is mostly uncharted territory. If you want a tried and true solution to get your car back on the road relatively quickly, I would go with CANTCU or Lamik.

How much HP do you figure the trans will hold even on xHP tune? I've been thinking about either a 8HP swap or 6-speed swap. I currently have the 6HP

There are guys making 500/600+ on 8hp45s. Of course not all 8hps are created equal. 8hp70/75 swaps are supported by CANTCU/lamik/htg solutions as well.

I think at that point I’d bite the bullet and have pure transmissions build it. Stage one is good for 1000hp 800tq

All 8hp70s/75s require to mate to these cars is an adapter plate and a compatible flex plate… the former is readily in stock at places like DomiWorks. All in, both are probably about half the cost of a pure trans upgrade.

Everything else will bolt on the same as the 8hp45? X drive and all?
