Way too long. I can't believe how difficult they've made it to change the filter on the 330d, but I normally change the air filter with every service I do. For the couple of quid they cost, it's stupid not to.

For what it's worth, the process is exacly the same on the 320D, although the filter is a little shorter. I also paid under £20 for a MANN filter, but from GSF. I've only had my car a few weeks and decided to do all the filters, even the fuel filter under the car. The Air Filter took me around 1hr 30mins including the cursory half time tea break.

I reckon I'll do it in under 1 hour next time

I havn't noticed any diference in mpg, but I've averaged 46.3mpg over 3,000 miles

330d M57T2's airfilters ive got down to 25 mins taking it steady now. Just about 20 mins if i go for it. Glad they've put proper airboxes on the N47 and N57.

I only get 1 hour 20 mins to do air, oil, fuel and micro filters at work. It easily do-able to be fair. BMW aren't too tight with time.

I must compliment this thread as its a very good how to. Very detailed and all correct.

Hi, All,
I just changed my filter by following Dave's Instrcutions. The Job took about 1.5 hrs.
The filter that out was really dirty. I hope my MPG improve now

Dave, would you be able to clean the MAF sensor at the same time as replacing the filter? Is there enough access to give it a squirt of contact cleaner?

I wouldn't touch it at all Rich, too delicate for my liking.

Did this on mine today. Piiiig of a job! But this walkthrough really helped! Allen key was a ball ache, realised i had an attachment for my socket set after i got it all off though! Went on alot easier!

Trouble is Dave, it doesn't matter.

They know the cost is passed to the service dept.
And labour is pure profit

Not many people are ever going to question the time to service the air filter when buying the car I guess.

If you want REALLY fecked up access, I think Renault have it off to a fine art.
And their trucks used to be ridiculous!

I belted the R26 rear wheel at <10mph sideways on a kerb in the snow. The stub is WELDED into the beam.
The toe was almost perfect, but lost all the camber - wheel was upright as the stub had bent.
Cost me (trade) over a grand to replace the rear beam. Carazy...

Did good on the LOOS on roundabouts for a bit

I haven't even attempted this yet but thought I'd say thanks before I do!

Great write up sir. Going to check the service history on mine and if it's due then the stealer ship can feck off if they think I'm going to get it done from them! Lol

Out of interest, does anyone know what the labour charge is to get this done on a 330d? (Dr Dave is yours an m sport? - is it any different if it is an msport or it isn't?)

It must be 30-45 mins in a dealership to do this - so you can bet on £60++ to do it......

Cracking write up - mine was done by the supplying garage about a month after I bought it as part of the deal and the mechanic I spoke to said it was a pig of a task and he was right - I noticed a huge difference to the engine response at low revs - btw your fuel economy is awful. I achieved a 47mpg average on a tank aboiut two months back - that was a one off but I normally get about 42/43. Mines a 325 d with a bluefin map.

Dam just noticed this thread after finding my air filter on my 320dse 2001 ! while i had the covers all removed i did notice the diesel spill off pipes needed replacement so changed them ! worth checking ! mind you the main feed is a right pain to put the new pipe on ! what a pain in the rear ! have to admit i think the design guy needs a big ! also had to tape the throx bit into place and use a head torch to get to the back bolts under the micro filter housing ! next project is to rip it all out and put a cortina 1.6gl engine in could have took that engine out and stripped top end in the time it takes to change the bledy air filter full service didnt take that much longer ! was getting a exhaust smell in car when i put fan on so now have to replace exhaust ! dammm more covers ! then 2 tyres then mot & tax ! will it never end ?

Just ordered a nice Pipercross filter so I can change the filter in my 330d, it's only done 30k on he filter but I can guess its totally gunked up with crud!

Great write up Dave, I'll be sure to follow this to a T and I hope to see some MPG improvement and maybe even a little throttle response improvement too...

excellent write up! I change all my filters about 2 months ago on my 06 330d and intend changing the oil filter every 6k and air filter every 12k, also if your fuel economy is still low after replacing the filters have a look at the egr thermostat £30 odd quid and takes less than 15 minutes to change and can make quite a difference to the mpg, its very difficult to tell when they fail, my engine has done high mileage so just changed everything inc the main thermostat too!
Just one question, what condition was the heat material under the your plastic engine cover like? mine crumbled and fell apart so I used some under bonnet heat material off another vehicle cut to size to fit under the plastic cover.
