Yup - Definitely having fun with the car - even in stock trim. There really isn't much on the road these days that will sit with a 335 (well, any beemer with the 3l turbo engine) up here at altitude - obviously excluding anything aproaching super car territory...

I agree with you on the M3 - I will always love and respect that machine, but in terms of real world practicality, the 335i really is the best bang for your buck... You're only a half second or so slower to 100km/h, pull only about 0.1g less lateral acceleration on the skid pad... I'm never going to be able to push the M3 to it's limits in my every day life. I'll never really be able to push the 335 to it's limits either in my every day life. But the 335 is more accessible (price / practicality) - so I really think I made the right choice...

Now, I just need the M3 boot spoiler, and the front diffuser for the M-Sport kit and I'll be 100% happy with the looks of the car. Then when I've got a bit more spare cash, the SSTT or something similar will be a perfect add-on, just to keep me smiling that little bit longer...

I envy you with all your modifying plans. Once i get going i do not stop. I have to confess that my 335i is in an advance state of tune and i doubt whether the new M3 will stand a chance even if it is tuned.

I have always loved tuning and modyfying my cars as a hobby. From my first datsun pulsar which i bought cash brand new for R15 000 in 1981. Can you believe the price! Nogal with my first study bursary money. Could not resist the temptation. I only gave that car away to a friend of mine early this year. Anyway, i tinted that car with an illegal black tint - i could hardly see where i was going. On university campus the car was known for being a "whore house on wheels". I do not know how the car got dubbed with this label, because i was really innocent! ha, ha...

I am fortunate that i only drive the 335i over weekends to have fun and when i want to hit the track.
My daily commuter is a 120diesel BMW which is also tuned to the hilt. anyway back to my 335i: I started with small interior mods like a new gear lever and small exterior changes. Then i replaced the standard air filter with a K&N filter. The HP and torque increased slightly (according to the dyno)but it was the sound that was the most obvious - a lovely throaty sound. Then I installed the AA xede from Active autowerke which transformed the car. I think you already checked our their website: www.activeautowerke.com
The increase and power is phenomenal. The third mod was the H&R race springs. The lowering transformed it even more. I got rid of the heavy BMW wheels for very light 19 inch deep dish alloys and very low profile bridgestones. The car behaves completely different to standard. I can only think of a nice afrikaans swear word to explain this to you but will behave myself. I wrote a review on this which is on this thread. Then i got rid of the first two cats and replaced it with riss racing catless turbo down pipes. The sound and power are intoxicating. I have also fitted some plasma boosters etc. I am still struggling to figure out how to combine the xede tune with a custom tune, but will eventually work it out. I followed a similar process with the 120d but kept the suspension stock on the 120d and it's been 3 years and i have not had a single problem. Nothing has broken or had to be replaced. Of course BMW always had something to say when the car went for it scheduled maintenance, but i listed all my mods in the waranty book and havent had to pay for servicing. I think if something had broken they would probably have blamed the mods. I know i am now talking all over the place but the thing i absolutely enjoyed about tuning the 120d was the day that i understood how the common rail turbo system worked and of course finding the signal running from the ecu to the turbine. (hidden) Needless to say the possibilities in raising the boost and playing with the timing of the opening of the electronic wastegates became great fun. The 335i is still new to me but i am getting to know the engine, its workings and components and i am convinced the car is capable of so much more. Especially when i look at those two small turbo's! But it is not only about releasing all its ponies it is also about how the car looks and behave on the road in the twists and corners etc and of course the howl of the straight six. I am planning 4 more mods for this year on the 335i - An intercooler, replacing the second cats with freeflowing cats, a decat exhaust and the new BMW steering wheel with the race meter. But the Rand must streghten against the dollar a bit more. Having said all of this if someone with a new M3 want to swop with me i will consider it seriously, but would only be able to give up the 335 for an hour or so.

Hehe - I was barely walking in 1981 I've also always loved modding though. MY first car was 1975 Super Beetle. Had it lowered, got a set of MX-6 rims fitted (had to do custom adaptors) changed out the drum brakes for discs, ditched the solex carbs in favour of Webber 36idf downdraft's - KNN filters - had to do a custom throttle linkage. Bored out the valves and stuck a 286 degree cam in there. The only thing I didn't get to do to it was to replace the stock gearbox with a 5 speed... But that was going to be quite a mission because I'd have to have changed the entire rear suspension out for an independent suspension - something like a Porsche 914... Didn't have the money for that... The Super Beetle was the one with a proper dash which I had padded and covered in leather. Put a nice custom sound system... It really was the best beetle on campus. My friend also had a really nice modded beetle and we'd REALLY have fun racing each other. Mine always edged him out a bit though

I must say your car sounds awesome . My 335 is my daily driver unfortunately, so I can't work on it on a whim, and I can only really just afford it, so mods will be made but at a very slow pace. I doubt I'll got as radical as you though. But the K&N and Xede are definitely up there on the wanted list... I'm quite happy (for now) with the suspension and the wheels (hell, I got them as a paid option, so I damn well should be happy with them ). But yeah, gotta get me them blacklines and the trunk spoiler and then I think I'll be happy with the car... for now...

As far as I remember, you click on the "BMW GARAGE" link at the top of the page (or click here: http://www.e90post.com/forums/bpgarage.php) Then there should be a link to "Add your Vehicle" - The rest should be straight forward from there...

The only mission is that I don't have a server to host files on so I have to use the "upload" function to put my pics up. They limit you to a certain size and resolution - so if you do upload a pic that is bigger than the limit it's automatically resized and the quality is not so good - so you might need to fiddle around with your files before you upload them to get them to a nice size and quality (if you need help with that just let me know)

Otherwise, if you're still struggling, let me know and I'll see if I can help further...

That was the good life. How can i forget the super beetle!! And the ford sierra big six!? My brother in law painted his super beetle with fiery red and black flames running from the massive low rear wing to the front (remember this mod?) with the brand new rear motor exposed. You could see a mile away how the fanbelt was spinning around the silver spools/pulley. Not sure what it was called. But he mainly used it to show off. There was not a kid on the block that did not want be in one and own one. The beetle begged to be mod. One could replace the entire car with fiberglass. I remember one day finding him grinding off the entire left skirting of the car with a smile. saying there is nothing that fiberglass resin cannot fix!

I remember the guys in the Cape padding the dash with mmm... what is the english again, don't know "skaapvel" Because the dash was known for cracking rather quickly in the sun.

Why is it that replacing the stock gearbox was always a second consideration after the mag wheels. Can you still recall? Was there a problem with the beetle gearboxes at the time? I only vaguely know that the gears were pretty tall and spaced far apart.

I continue to have wet dreams about the V8 big six Ford and the opel superboss kadet. I guess what i miss is when people could just enjoy their toys, share it and have fun and if it breaks everyone club in to "fix" it. I notice that you tuned your beetle by yourself. Today we have BMW specialists and dealers telling us to leave modding alone especially the turbos on the 335. Ja, right!

Yeah - although I think I joined the "times" pretty late... When I got the beetle in 97, all my friends were looking forward to driving fiesta's and the like... It was only guys like my friend and I who would still ogle over his dad's 351 cubic inch V8 1961 Mustang.

The main reason I wanted to change the gearbox was due to the fact that I was basically limited (top speed-wise) to about 160km/h. The fouth gear was very tall, but that's as far as it got you, and the engine itself was screaming at around 4500 / 5000rpm... If I had another ratio, I'm sure I could have gotten the beetle up to 180+ Whether that's a good idea in a beetle or not is a different story. But tshe was lowered and had some nice fat tyres (195/45's if I remember) so she really held the road well.

You're right though, it's getting a bit difficult to work on cars yourself these days - the more modern the car, the more inaccessible things seem. I just recently started servicing my wifes car myself rather than taking it to the dealership, and I must say, even though it's just a Fiat Palio (for now), it was fun to get my hands dirty again - I haven't worked on a car in at least 7 years or so... But then again, the basics never really change.

My previous car was a Mazda RX-8, and that was a whole other kettle of fish. There was no easy way to work on that yourself - they intake / intake manifold for example is a variable kind with solenoids everywhere controlling opening and closing these and those chambers / pipes... Very complex. But if I hadn't traded it in on the 335, it would have been fun to work around with (if it wasn't my daily driver)... But alas it ran out of Motor Plan and the engine started giving troubles. A friend who also drove an RX-8 had similar engine troubles whilst still under Motor Plan and had to have his engine replaced entirely (they don't seem to fix things these days) and the cost would have been +- R60,000 - I don't have that much change lying around myself. So before things got too bad (any new driver of the car wouldn't notice a problem, but I could feel that things weren't the way they used to be - and of course the dealer couldn't find anything wrong) I traded her in. And I haven't looked back since (well, I've only really had the car since the begining of April 08 but still).

Whats up guys, been on the forum since Feb following the 335 tuning side. Just ran into this tonight. I am Gauteng based and the vrou drives a 335i. I pulled a move and got her a car I will enjoy too hehe. Heres a pic of our ride.

Tow bar is gonna be a problem.
The diffuser has to be cut - best to just get rid of the bar

Do any of you know where I can make a stencil for etching the vin number on the windows?
Our cars come with a stencil, and it's usually in the owners manual... but I've lost mine.

And it cannot be ordered from the dealer.

Amy ideas?

Jislaaik it is nice to be home! And of course welcome to Georgesmooth! Love the white colour.

I am still bubbling over of all the exciting machines i was able to see and touch. So where do i start.

First, Irq5. Thanks man for letting me in on the beetle and the RX8. So many memories. I can tell you those first cars will remain with us for a very long time. I am trying to get a picture from my brother in law on his super beetle. Will post it one day.

Revo, i will check for the stencil and let you know tomorrow.

Ok. the trip. It was a bit of a wirlwind journey. But i ended up in Austria, the land of the audi and merc. But i spend most of my time with the oldies. i am talking about the "tier brigade". this use to be an old detective TV series and they drove those old german cars!?I hope you can open the clips.

The new Audi R8 was a bit too much and too many. Found one that was hectically tuned - nice. Of all the cars that i got to see the one that got me bonkers was the new Seat 177kw version - in blue. The owner had it already for a year and tuned to the limit. Freeflow and catless exhaust system. He does not clean the rear pipes anymore. The rear diffuser is constantly black of the emissions. My picture for it does not work but all i can say the car is a screamer.

I saw a smashed up new Corsa OPC (blue). I was really sad for the car and of course for those that might have got hurt. Driver was probably too enthusiastic to take the car to the limit.

I was driven around in a 1996 BMW seven series - Old but the genetics was obvious and a cabrolet audi - see pics. What is interesting is that most cars do not have drivetrain insignia like 120d or 230CSL on the boot. None. I had to guess or asked the owners. The best car i encountered was the new (still to come to S.A.) C65 AMG. About 375 kw - something like that. Yo, this thing could motor. I don't know, but it did not feel so quick off the mark as the 335i from say 0 - 80, but it certainly drag hard and fast. I hope it comes to our shores.

Back to the tier brigade. The machines were in perfect condition. The owners and young kids that accompanied them were so proud in parading the vehicles. It was clear that their was a long history between them.

Ok, i will catch up with you guys tomorrow.

I am thinking about going H&R race in my car, but not so sure how the ride feels.
I have Bilstein B12 kit at the moment - shocks and springs.
It's a great kit, but I might want to go a little lower in the front, and I think the HR race will do the trick.

No luck with the stencil. I checked both cars books, nothing. Sorry. Also tried my brother - zero. However, I will bring both books along at our run, perhaps i am missing something.

About our breakfast run. I could do this coming saturday, 14 June 2008 say 9to 10.30am. I have to take pics at a 21 birthday party from 1pm till late. If it is Ok with you i have a suggested route which we can discuss offline.

About the race springs. I have now done about two thousand kilometres with the race springs and can give you my straight opinions, but would like to catch up with you for a ride and to show you how low the ride is and some of the compromises. I took a picture last week during a perfect sunset. See pic.
