Multifunction steering wheel error

So I've been making do without my steering wheel controls for longer than I can imagine, I've finally got round to check it out. I thought it was something to do with retrofitting cruise control. In all honesty I can't remember if it worked after or not but I'm sure it did. Also none of the lights on the steering wheel buttons work either.

I ran a Carly scan and it threw up error -009520 - MFL Steering wheel.

Doing a bit of research most people point this to the steering angle sensor. Now i had wheel alignment performed and I wondered if this could be linked if the steering angle sensor wasn't reset, is this a possibility or am I looking at changing the whole slip ring assy?

Car is a 2006 E90 Alpina D3

Any advice or comments appreciated

usually this is slip ring problem, people remove slip ring with SZL and do not fix slip ring position
it is nothing to do with steering angle sensor

I recall when I fitted my cruise control I had a similar error; the slip ring that came with the stalks I bought was defective. I compared part numbers from my old slip ring, so I just reused that with the cruise stalks - worked perfectly.
The error code I got was to do with the multi function steering wheel being present in the Vehicle Order (VO) but not mechanically present as the slip ring was defective.
If it were your steering angle sensor that required calibration, you would have the steering wheel icon illuminated - I'm assuming that's not the case.

That is correct, no warning lights on at all.

Just no steering controls or the buttons being lit up when headlights on.

I still have my original, might see if I can swap it over.

Now to find someone to recode for it...

SZL is schaltzentrum aka stalk switches module under steering wheel, on which slip ring is attached

The only thing you would need to recode (in the traditional sense) is the Cruise Control - but I'm assuming you got that done at the time? Taking the wheel & slip ring off might throw another steering calibration error; this can be dealt with by anyone with Tool32. But as long as the car originally had the multi-function steering wheel, the buttons should work ok.
When I did mine & had to swap over the slip ring again, it didn't throw an error & didn't need recalibration.

you can carefully replace only slip ring, and you do not need code it at all

Thats correct I had the cruise coded when I fittedit, I'm sure the steering wheel buttons worked then, most probably a faulty slip ring now

Just wanting to check, if it is the slip ring I need to replace, would my horn still work? Reading some other peoples issues with slip ring and they mention the horn wasn't working either.

I don't know if that changes things as my horn is fully working?

thanks for replying, but to confirm I'm not worried about when I connect it back up, I'm trying to confirm if it is the slip ring that is currently at fault.

At the moment only my steering wheel buttons are not working, my horn is working just now.

When I've been researching the slip ring the last day or so others are saying the horn does not work as part of the slip ring failure.
