Use Delphi coils - avoid Bosch coils

Both Delphi and Bosch are OEM suppliers of coils. The Delphi coils are about 50% more expensive than the Bosch. Last year, my independent garage replaced my coils with Bosch coils and I had constant misfires. I switched back in the fall to Delphi and the car runs great. I am FBO with upgraded turbo, tune, etc. so your mileage may vary, but I suggest paying a little extra for the Delphi plugs as it is well worth it.

The issue is tunes put more demand on ignition coils. Bad plugs put more demand on coils. So many variables.

I swapped out my coils in the N55 with Bosch (OEM was Bosch) had zero issues. Have done over 10k miles with them now. My vehicle is not tuned if you are wondering.

I just had a bad experience with Delphi coils from FCP Euro, after only 6k miles of driving on them one failed last night. Failed hard. Constant engine malfunction warning, could not be cleared. Swapped the plug out of no. 2 where the misfire was into no. 1 - nothing, swapped the coil out of no. 2 and into no. 1, the misfire followed, put in a old Genuine BMW coil in, car ran fine, much smoother than before. There must be something about plugs and coils from genuine BMW, just better quality, fitment, materials etc. Gonna go back to Genuine BMW coils when I get a chance.

Good thing about FCP euro, they will return just about anything for a refund or replacement. They returned my plugs I bought from them no questions asked.

I was only running the BMW PPK flash tune not any tuning I have in my sig, nor JB4 if that makes any difference.

I've been running replacement Bosch coils for well over a year now with no issues whatsoever. And the past few months have been with a JB4 on Map 5 making 15+ psi peak boost.

Good to know. Looks like I have a bad coil. Recently installed MHD. As soon as I went 1+ I started getting misfires cyl #3 only, even stage 1 now as soon as I go past half throttle. No problem on stock map? So today I swapped #2 and #3 coils and quess what cyl #2 misfires now. Just ordered 1 Bosch coil at rock auto. If I have to get the whole set maybe Delphi but all the others are BMW OEM (Bosch or Delphi?) as it was always serviced by BMW. I had already ordered a set of NGK plugs, socket, and gap tool from BMS. May be able to hold off on all that for a bit. It would be cool to fix it for now with just coil. I will put the NGK (1 step cooler) plugs in sooner or later especially when I go to Stage 2. I believe the original BMW plugs have 19k mi running bone stock so might still be good?

Eldor coils have been fine for me, zero misfires. Bosch coils will eventually fail and misfire on upgraded setups, Delphi is a nice upgrade. Eldor makes the newest versions for the ignition coils used by BMW. You can buy them cheap direct from the manufacturer without the BMW logos.

Stock plugs are good for stage 2+. Stock coils are your best bet too while under 20ish psi

My stock bosch coils were perfectly fine all the way to 95k miles... I ran the stock turbo to 200+ load for years with them running anywhere from 20-26psi of boost.

Replaced the stock coils with Eldor. It's been another good 25k miles.

Put the Bosch coil in #2 and that took care of the misfire. At least for a while. I flashed S1+ and it was running strong again BUT I did one hard pull through 2nd and 3rd to 6k rpm and at the top of 3rd it missed. Cyl 3. So I went back to stage 1 and did a bunch of pulls no problem. I'll go ahead and put the plugs in soon. But the Bosch coil definitely fixed what I had going on and the one I pulled out was the same Bosch coil.

I bought a pack of 6 delphi coils from FCP about 10 months ago. After putting around 6-7k miles on them, I started to notice a weird hesitation under load that would get more noticeable with people/weight in the car. The car would also start to "hiccup" on cold starts like it was misfiring, but I never got any codes. Had the first one go trying to accelerate in 3rd gear on MHD stage 2 and the car started misfiring and threw codes. Flashed the stock map and it drove fine for 2 weeks until finally going out for good. Over the past month I have had 4 more go out, one by one. Replaced them with new BMW "OEM" coils (which are delphi, and the same design) and the car has been running far smoother.

Long story short, Delphi coils (or bad coils in general) could be the underlying cause of hesitation, low power, oscillation, etc without throwing any codes or being the obvious contributing factor.

So whats the difference between the FCP Delphi and BMW Delphi? Did you get the good ones from the dealer?

Yeah, I got the new ones from the dealer as my car is my DD and I needed to swap the coils ASAP. The parts themselves are identical, and IIRC the part number listed on FCPEuro and the BMW parts catalog match as well.
