335d EGR thermostat?

Does anyone know if the 2011 335d M57 engine has a thermostat for the EGR system and cooler?

NO.

The EGR cooler on the M57 has a temperature sensor and an engine coolant loop. However, the cooler does not have a thermostat to control coolant flow.

Interesting. I keep getting fault P2457 Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) Cooling System Performance. My engine thermostat was broken i replaced it and my EGR cooler was seeping coolant from the welds so i also replaced that. I can't think of anything else that would cause the "EGR cooling system performance" fault code.

M57 does have a EGR thermostat. 25d and 30d definitely does, but with 35d it seems like some do, others don't.

Market differences?

I have found engine bay pics of 35d cars WITH the thermostat, and 35d cars WITHOUT the thermostat.

Here is one with the thermostat (red ring). Ignore the yellow line.

When I check RealOEM with the VIN of my car, it shows up with partnumber.

Mine does not have that. I might need ISTA to clear the code. I been using a generic OBD2 code reader. I can't think of anything else that would cause that fault code to stay ON and come back after 20-30 miles of driving.

Interesting. I guess maybe EU spec 335d has it, but not US spec?

Yeah, maybe a proper BMW diagnostic tool can be more helpful. Hope you figure it out

Big possibility and i think the X5 M57 might have the EGR cooler thermostat. Wish i could just D-E-L-E-T-E everything, but i can't deal with the emissions inspection headache every 2 years in California.

Thank you. I'm starting to think i possibly have carbon build up. Most likely going to order a new intake manifold to replace and try to clean out the valves.

How many miles? Have you replaced the water pump? What's your coolant temperature when you're car warms up?

I can't imagine carbon build up would cause a coolant issue.

I'm not having a coolant issue, just fault code P2457 (EGR) Cooling System Performance.

My thermostat was replaced at the same time as the EGR cooler because the temperatures weren't going up and I found the thermostat spring broken when I removed it. My EGR cooler was leaking coolant from the welds that appeared to crack so I replaced it at the same time. My coolant temperature is around 180-190F if I recall correctly checking with my Carly app.

I see... that's super weird. I have my egr cooler completely blocked off, disconnected and coolant lines blocked off in my x5 35d, all stock btw, and I don't have any codes about that.

I also wonder if the egr EUV being bad has anything to do with the cooling performance of the egr cooler.

Is your car tuned for the delete? If so that's probably why you don't get fault codes.

I have a brand new intake manifold on its way. I'm going to carbon clean the valves, replaced EGR valve and the intake manifold and see what direction it leads me after.

My 335d is tuned, but my x5 35d that I'm talking about is fully stock (no tune) with egr completely removed and it doesn't throw those codes. I'll attach a picture of my egr related codes. But that's why I'm wondering if maybe a bad EUV is causing the poor cooling performance.

I think I have a egr valve from my 335d still if your looking for one!
