Cool.. my speakers should be here next week. I hope they sound good. Not sure how they will mix since they don't go as high as the oems.. I think 6k is there top, so I will need some serious tweets and processing love to get them to mix well with the right tweets. Thinking of using some jl audio C2 tweets I have laying around first. If not then I will try something else that I can blend well.

I installed my 10.25" universal unit last night. I took a bunch of videos to make a diy. Overall im really pleased with the unit. There are some little quirks but I am going to go over it in the video. It fits almost exactly how I wanted except for something I didn't realize. Our head units are offset towards the driver side and with the joying spacer needed for the e90 to mount where I have it you can't center it. I need to come up with a customer bracket to extend the clips and I think I could get it almost 100%. Aside from that I think it would be the perfect unit for our cars.

I don't want to thread jack so I started another thread for diy I created. I will go into more depth in a part 2.

Here's the diy which will be useful in this thread if people are considering a single din.

Great vid man, looks wicked.. just as I thought it was going to fit.. Have you tried washers..? Maybe that can solve the bracket issue?

Great job PortMoody! Would be good to see some wide angle, better lit photos to get a better idea of the overall look..
Did you wire in constant power from your fuse box?

Very excited about doing my installation soon.

Thanks. Washers wouldn't work. The screws are really short. I am asking Joying for the specs on the screws to see if I can source longer screws and look at making my own spacer. I attached a picture of the spacer they provide. You can only use the widest hole placement on the screen with that bracket. I attached a picture of where I actually need to place the clip.

I didn't. The power wire is looped back into the harness. It's not like the eonon where they leave it for you to power into the fuse box. I don't know if its necessary to hard wire it. The unit boots lighting quick at all times and it retained my settings as far as I can tell, so I'm just going to leave it for now. I took some better pics and attached them. Let me know if they work for what you wanted to see.

I've had both units and overall this one is a lot better. The only thing I still believe the Eonon does better is I think the sound might have been better out of that unit. I remember turning the volume half way and it was very loud on the Eonon. Its still good with the Joying but I definitely want to upgrade to a dsp/amp and better speakers.

Here are my initial thoughts

Looks good. Would you mind taking a profile pic from the sides and the top.. I want to see the space between the unit and the dash. I think I'm switching gears in my stereo install. Need these pics to confirm, also how does it actually sound is more what I need to know. Are you using spdif?. Thx

Sure, here is a profile pic. I also put it in my install thread. It's touching the dash. I need to space it out further to get the top clips to fully engage. I've ordered some parts to give a shot at centering it and spacing it out. I'll let you know what I tried and how it went.

I am not using the spdif as I don't have an input for it with the stock hifi system. I am thinking I might get a dsp but honestly we played around with the EQ settings on the built in DSP and it is sounding pretty good. I can't really take it louder than about 16 on the volume without it really being overly loud. It goes to at least 30. I've seen other reviews that it sounds amazing when using the spdif output. I can only compare it to the BMW Y cable I was using and sound quality on that was pure garbage compared to this. This is so much better that its not even a close comparison. Also, I tried bluetooth audio vs usb on carplay and USB is also far better than bluetooth audio. Overall I'm very pleased. I will need to raise the unit a little because it doesn't physically cover the climate control but the viewing angle from my seat blocked the lcd so I can't see what the settings are.

I need to learn about sound tuning more and I will hopefully see what the most is I can squeeze out of this EQ before trying an upgraded amp/dsp.

mounting modifications

The fact the screen wasn't horizontally centered was really bothering me. I had some ideas about how to correct this but I was very happy to find a solution that requires no permanent modifications to the brackets or head unit. I made a video explaining it and I took some pictures to show how it sits now. I also raised the unit so I can now see the climate control LCD without any obstruction. This is now perfectly mounted and even better than before. Very pleased with this unit. The video has links to the screws & washers I used. Shouldn't cost you more than about $2 at fastenal.

My 8.8" head unit finally arrived today so I could finally check if it fits the fascia.
Unfortunately it does not - the radius of the fascia at the top prevents the display from sitting in the correct position.

So the next step will be to modify the fascia possibly using an aluminium faceplate to allow the correct flush fitment.

I would not modify the fascia yet. The head unit will likely protrude beyond the fascia so there might not be any point in doing that. I would install the unit and mount it first, to see what modifications would benefit, if at all. As you could see from the pictures I posted of the profile of the unit, it will protrude. You likely have to cut into the metal housing of the head unit to make it recess further on the sliding mounting bracket if you're trying to get it flush.

Did you get the 9mm spacers with it?

The Ebay seller pictures were very misleading and suggested that it would fit nicely. Anyhow I've decided to use the metal brackets but discard the face plate and fabricate my own which will look better anyway.
No I didnt get any spacers with it but they won't be needed.

I think I understand why you did it this way. You wanted it flush inside the recess. If you can make a faceplate then, you're good. Did that metal frame come with your fascia?

Yes you could say I'm looking for a more OEM look. The metal frame came with the fascia.
