E93 Trunk Leak....Cant find the source
I have a 2008 328i convertible and water is getting in to the trunk occasionally. Its coming in on the drivers side, in the compartment where the Logic7 amplifier is. I cannot find the source of the leak. I have looked around all the connection points for the rain channels and they are dry. I have felt under all the liner and trim in the compartment to see if its leaking in and coming under all this, but its all dry. I can not find water anywhere other than where its collecting under the amp. I bought the car in January and found that it leaks after the amp shorted out, but I never found the source then. I have washed the car and had it in the rain since then, and have never had any more water in there. Last night after about a good 12 to 16 hours of rain I went to go run an errand and heard the telltale humming sound coming through speakers and checked the trunk; water under the amp! Once again, there is NO indication of where this water is coming from. Its almost like its getting in through osmosis!!
I searched through some of the threads but I cant find anything on this issue. Does anyone have any suggestions? |

It seems the water is making its way in, but because of its tendency to bead up and fall on hard surfaces, it's leaving its path dry.
I am not familiar with the e93, so if this is unreasonable or too convoluted, I do apologise, but this is what I'd do...you're gonna think I'm crazy. Get clean, dry paper towel, cut it into thin long strips, and draw a thick line on it with a washable marker. Then, tape the paper towel strips inside the trunk compartment where the leak is, being sure to put it higher than the water level usually gets, and also being sure to make a complete circle around the area that floods. When water makes its way in, it will wet the paper towel and smear the washable marker line, giving you a clue as to the direction the water is coming from. I haven't tried marking directly on the metal itself before, it may work, but I can't promise. Do the e93s also have the issue where water leaks in through the taillight bolts/nuts? If so, I wouldn't be surprised if it's coming from there. Jon |

I FOUND THE LEAK!!
I went back and checked my drains and they were in good shape. I pulled the tail light assembly to see if it was getting in around that. Then I started checking the weather stripping and poured water on it to see how it flowed. I caught a glimpse of water behind the body panel where some seam filler is. I dried it up and poured water down the weather stripping and saw it coming in through a hole in the seam. Thank you guys for the suggestions! |
