Just showing off?

You kinow once you notice something, you then start to look out for it?

Well, my latest little observation is new Audis with the LED day running lights. Virtually every Audi fitted with said headlights does seem to have the lights ON even if it is glorious sunshine. Yes I know they are called 'day running lights' but would these people still bother if they were standard lights or would they switch them off/get dealer to override?

What does everyone think to the lights in general?

I think they look good when it's dusk and other manufacturers appear to be following suit in some way. Porsche are now doing LED style for the rear lights.

They will be law by 2011 for all cars built, to have DRL's fitted

You could say the same about the daytime running lights on Bm's.
How many of us have turned the DRL's (daytime running lights) off?

At the moment some people see it a bit like people driving round with their front fogs on.

I have heard DRL's will be fitted to all new cars in a couple of years, so we are ahead of the game!

As for the Audi's, The lights look alright on the R8 and A5 but on the lower models (A4 and A3) the line of lights is too short IMO.

I'd rather have angel eyes than some gay looking line of LED's tho!

Seriously? But does once fitted by law mean that they cannot be switched off 'by law' and we'll all have to have DRL's?

But aren't the DRL's on the saloon/touring, the main lights - they were on my 335, I questioned the dealer and they confirmed this to me. Its only the coupes/convertibles that have the 'bright' angle eye's as DRL's. The only way I could get angle eye's was switch on the sidelights and they were never as bright as the coupe!!

I didn't go for xenons, so I don't have the 'angel eye' rings anyway.

My lights have been on auto with the DRL's off for the last 2 years.

OliH you lazy bugger - you could have googled it

Have done and guess what, it's clear as mud. Just clarifies what you said about the fact that DRLs will be a mandatory fitting to new vehicles etc. Apparently our government has oppossed this but lost out to the EU. One concern being that it will be a disadvantage to bikers who already have dipped headlights on now. Many people believe the bikers will not be seen as much as they are now (or not ).

I like my DRL's and leave them on all the time, but I do think the A5 LED's are a little strange looking but they are probably more efficient than the BMW DRL's that consume 70W.

Noticed what Carlos - the fact that through the idrive you could select to have DRL's or not? The Cayman has a similar facility through the PCM.

Totally off topic, but wtf. The BMW idrive system is better than Porsche's PCM, far more on it. BMW sat. nav. is more intuitive as well.

When I 'googled it' the info. did say that the 'power consumption' would be less than that of dipped headlights and the fact that Audi's DRL's already meet these requirements.

I had a car once that the Canadian version required DRLs. They used the regular headlights but unless the light switch was turned on for main beams, would only shine at 80%. The electrical diagram confirmed this.

I keep mine on even though I can easily turn them off through iDrive. The question I've never found answered is, how much more fuel is being used with DRLs and does this extra cost truly have a benefit?

Fair comment on the postcode front which the Porsche system does use but the PCM is lacking in other areas for the same money.

Surrendered I think Floyd. Being the optimist I like to con myself in thinking they've let this one through in order to be tougher on another perhaps more important issue. Naive perhaps?
