320d 177HP ecu remap problem

Hi,

I've got e91 320d 177HP automatic transmission.

It had ecu remap to 218HP and 435Nm at 2300 RPM, unfortunately after remap, there was something like rumble/shaking/vibration at 3rd gear only between 2100 and 2500 RPM only when accelerating hard. Moreover, something more like mild metallic vibration between 2200 and 2300 RPM on 4th and 5th gear (when accelerating hard only).

Tuner said, the program was OK, tested with other similar cars, so there's a problem with the car, not the program.

But he remapped it again, decreased the power by a half, unfortunately still some rumble and vibration. He could still decrease the power, but it doesn't make sense, because we're getting close to the stock version.

So, I've got the car checked at bmw dealer and they said everything was OK with the car.

Have you got any idea, what can be wrong with the car and what to look at?

Garage List
Transmission rumble on an auto is usually to do with excess torque rather than power. Who did your remap?

Thanks parapaul, yes I know it's usually excess torque, but:
- they say similar map was OK with other similar cars (so there should be no vibration)
- I had torque decreased and there's still the problem. I can decrease more - but it will be close to the stock.

Remap done by reputable tuner in central europe.

i was warned about the 320D Remap on Auto boxes and i repeated it here and got shot down because of it.

The Auto box in the 320D is not the best auto box bmw do.

i wouldn't be surprised if the box is buggered in general

I had the same issue when e-maps did my 177hp 320D auto, we reduced the max torque 3 times to get rid of most of the rumble but there was still some in 3rd between 2000-2500rpm. In the end I just tried take it easy in 3rd. No point reduceing the re-map levels any more otherwise it would have not felt any quicker.

Could it not be something relatively simple such as prop shaft joints/bearing?

I tried a remap on my 320d 177 and didn't like the effect on the auto box. Remap itself was great but not what it did in conjunction with the box.... and I have had loads of cars remapped - and never experienced the feeling I got with the 320d box.

I took the map off and the problems went away. I sold the car and got a 330d ... which I am very reluctant now to remap !

Thanks a lot for all the replies.

-prop shaft joints/bearing - bmw dealer inspected it and said it's OK, they suggested it's auto box - but i'll check prop shaft joints/bearing one more time myself - maybe I'll find something (but I doubt it) - is there any point in changing guibo or centre prop bearing - just in case?

- does it make sense to check/change torque converter ? what to look at?

-i can ask tuner to modify the program, so it's stock up to 2600, and then it's full power.....

I can see more 177HP 320d auto have the same problem, which is not good....

IIRC BMW now offer an official remap and they do replace the torque converter

BTW - does anyone know what's the part number (torque converter) ? - if mine is dead - I'll consider buying this stronger one.....

Hi how did you deal later on with the problem?Do you keep remaped your car?
Was not only problem, that you didnt "adapt" auto box after remap?

i have the same issue. remaped by superchips. got rumble in 3rd about 70kph..not bad..not all the time..adjusted the remap 3 times and still got a little bit of rumble..i just chose to keep it on and take it easy at that point of rumble...as i didn't want to decrease the torque even more....this is a classic for 320d auto remap as far as i can tell..i was kind of worried at the beginning but got over it. i will take my chances...i can't go for 330d as in my contry the car taxes are about 15 times more than the ones i have for 2.0d.
i would pay almost 1000 euros per year with 3.0d as opposed to 50 euros for 2.0 ) the fuel efficiency is also a factor....so stop suggesting a car upgrade )

I did ... it didn't make any difference - the car hated it.
