Pants ...

Driving along in the RS2000 yesterday on a shake-down run and notice a slightly unusual noise. Glance at my oil pressure guage to see it reading ZERO ! It was reading healthily earlier.

Immediately pull-in and switch off.

Today start to take things apart and looks like the oil pump is not pumping. Rest of the engine looks good - lots of residual oil coating the cam, oil filter feed, oil pressure take-off etc. Bugger. It was a new pump - with approx 1200 miles.

Quick phone calls made, sourced a new High Capacity/High Pressure oil pump in central Scotland. And all the associated gaskets, and new hex drive.

Just grabbing a few big sandwiches then back around to the garage and drop the cross member, and remove the sump, starter motor, pick-up pipe, oil pump etc. (REALLY TIGHT fit in a MK1 RS2000). Then leg it up to collect the oil pump.

Hopefully have the engine all back together and ready for the show on Sunday.

Zooom ..... bit of a busman's holiday.

D.

Don't forget to torque the bolts. I rebuilt an engine once and forgot that crucial step, to the detriment of the engine.

I always use the 'FT' setting for torquing up bolts. Never failed me yet

Car in lots of pieces, dropped the crossmember/front suspension completely off the car ... fault found. Dodgy Hex bolt which connects oil pump to drive/distributor.

Glad I heard that little jingly noise and stopped immediately !!!

Will post pics later.

Off now to collect the new oil pump, new hex and gasket set.

Don't worry, all bolts will be torqued

Engine was completely rebuilt 2 years ago, maybe done about 1,500 miles. Uprated Oil Pump was brand new. Let down by a bad hex bolt. Always the weakest link in a new chain.

Will be back on the road tomorrow.

Didn't pack for doing this .... white shirt on, and a pair of leather broques pokking out from under the car

All back together, new oil, timing reset. Out for a blast

Oil pressure sitting lovely.

Smell of very hot fresh engine oil, gear oil and polish lingering in the car now.

Off to the show tomorrow.
