Oil is cheap in my eyes.....I change mine every 5k so I can sleep better at night knowing my oil in my car is clean.
On a side note...I noticed a couple of things. 1) I find that changing my oil at 5k vs 7,500 or higher I average better gas mileage... 1 to 1.5 more miles on a full tank of gas. 2) My car 2007 335i sedan with 50k miles would burn oil. I would have to add a quart of oil between oil changes. I say change it save gas and sleep better at night!!! P.s if BMW's had a dipstick so I could see color/condition of oil I may or may not change at 5k. So in my eyes if i cant see it don't risk it change it!!! Nope! Factual analysis is misinterpreting an oil analysis on a car that has been tracked. Actually the dude with the analysis concludes "Looks like I was wrong. The analysis came back and the condition of my oil is still good. ...Lastly, I’m running catless downpipes, and was concerned about excessive fuel in the oil – there were no problems. All in all, a healthy oil sample at almost 10K miles and 2 track days! Woot! |

What is missing from this thread is that NO ONE posted any experiences or links showing that 15k oil changes demolished their engine. By now someone would have posted "Followed recommended change levels and now my engine just seized" or "Followed recommended change levels and now my engine has all this sludge. See attached pics"
Also, no lawsuits on this topic? People sue for everything nowadays. An absence of lawsuits is another sign that 15k oil changes are fine.

If no codes are being thrown use Chevron Techron fuel injector cleaner (concentrate). It solves rpm fluctuating upon cold start-up. Also, for most BMW problems start off by scanning your car with the Peake Research Tool. It contains the actual BMW codes. If you want to register a newly installed battery for free (just buy a $10 cable) and google/download BMWLogger

I don't drive an e90 (yet) but I do extended OCIs with my car without any issue.
Just be sure to run a quality filter (I use Napa Gold/Wix) and a good group IV/V oil (I use Esso XD3) and you're good to go. Truly synthetic (PAO/Ester-based) oils don't ever really break down, I've known some that have gone 60k km without an oil change (but changing filters) and an UOA shows the oil is still healthy. BITOG has some crazies. My first OCI was 16k, and my next one will be closer to 30k. However, my engine burns about 1L of oil about 8-10k so I top it up then.

Since Autozone's price on Mobil 0w40 is still $7.99 in my area, I guess I'll continue to go to Tischer for a $79.95 oil change (with coupon) using OEM BMW 5w30.

If you search the forums... I've read from people buying oil from a BMW dealer for 4.99. This probably varies by area, but one of the few things the dealer might not over-charge for.
And then there's neurotic ppl like myself that <3 Red Line. |
