N57 catch can parts

I know a number of people are interested in this but there's little info online. I haven't had chance to install this yet but my car is in for some work next week and my mechanic is going to fit this at the same time.

The parts I bought are as below. The catch can was from a different seller but it's this item as I chose it due to being discreet and baffled.

To fit the hose, remove the piping from the Breather pipe and insert the barbs into the collars. One will need to be glued in as the barb is a little small. The hose can then be fitted to the Breather collars.

Black baffled catch can

2x14mm straight pipe joiners.

1x Breather pipe BMW part number 13717803842

Appropriate hose.

You'd ideally want one with a measuring glass or plastic window built in to see the level straight away. The rest would be down to the variables of the problem.

I read a mahoosive thread about some guy adding a sophisticated can can and some other things.. I'm sure he said his turbo pipe, Intercooler and EGR was completely oil free.. I'm intrigued to know how clean yours will be once it's done.. I was thinking of adding one myself but people said not to bother.. everyone to their own I suppose

It'll stop oil vapour mixing with egr soot and creating sludge.
Take your inlet manifold off and look.

A quick way to check is to take off the MAP sensor. You'll be able to see how much build up is on the sensor and also see into the manifold.

About half of the diameter in mine was built up of carbon, a good blast of electronic cleaner from halfrauds got it back

Same here. I also gained around 4mpg the first time I cleaned the MAF & MAP sensors and reset adaptations.

Nooo: :O

I've been trying to improve my fuel economy for ages as it hovered around 21MPG.. after cleaning MAP, intake manifold and EGR it now hovers 18-19 haha. Also, did you have to reset adaption for MAP? I was under the immpressiom it was just the Mass Air Flow that needed adaptions resetting?

Is your air filter clean?

That's right, only MAF adaptations can be reset.

It is mate, my venture started with Cranckase breather and air filter, then sprayed MAP with electrical cleaner and cleared a lot (by this time fuel economy the same) then whipped intake manifold, EGR and removed swirlflaps except this time I lost a few MPG? haha. I'm now doing my thermostats as they're knackered.. I took the EGR thermostat off last night and can blow straight through it, I'll be doing main thermostat today if it stops raining. I can see there being an improvement in MPG but I want to be mid to high 20's and can't see thermostats alone adding 6 - 8MPG haha.

How long for your catch can installation then mate?

What engine is it Buddy?

I have an N57 so thermostats aren't an issue for me but everything I've read suggests they make a huge difference.

As soon as I get a gap in my work diary; I'll be pencilling in with my mechanic. The back end of next week is a potential.

I have the M57N2, thermostats appear to be a big issue for this engine :/ and awesome!, will be good to see it all installed and see what sort of a difference it makes to the internals

I've got everything to build mine into my N57. I will take photos & confirm all parts to make it easier for others.

Where are you planning to locate the can as that's been my quandary?

Just up from the airbox, shortest routing possible and use heat proofing for the oil resistant piping.
