Nexus 7 2013 + CarPlay!!!

About a year and a half ago I discovered a great DIY thread on the Nexus 7 2013 Setup. I was a bit late in the game to be apart of the discussions while the experimentation phase was underway. Although; I did learn from all of your posts here to anyone that contributed to the conversation.

Since then I sourced my parts and installed my nexus to get what I needed. Two weeks ago, however, I discovered a post talking about Avinusa.com's top mount navigation system. I thought it was awesome and started to read up on how they utilized Apple CarPlay. Found out they sold the usb dongle for their setups separately and sent out an email asking if the device would work on a nexus. They actually didn't know. So I ponied up the $99 and bought one.

I did a little searching before writing this up and could not find anyone utilizing this "new" device on a Nexus 7. So I apologize if it has been covered.

I actually also placed an order on a website called "Wish" for the same looking type of device for $47. They both showed up and turns out... They are the same device. I mean literally. Same internals. Sorry I didn't take a picture of the two because of excitement of the install.

P.S. for those who jailbreak their iPhones. You can install a tweak that will let you run any app you have (Waze is my favorite) over CarPlay.

Nice to see people doing top dash instead of the regular in dash.

Beware that if you plan on keeping it mounted in the car all the time; you might risk a fire. Batteries explode under heat.

It's all done. I untucked the DAC to show its location.

The only issue I'm having now is charging. I have a -mA in my power management from Timur. Ranges from -138 to -570mA.

Anyone have advice?

Is the charging cord going through USB hub? That could be limiting factor .

Wait is your whole setup powered through that one USB cigarette lighter? You need to seperate it out

No. The power goes straight to the tablet through the OTG. Then OTG goes to the hub for USB Mounting of the CarPlay adapter. The DAC is also on the hub.

I may need to modify a power cord for the hub. Otherwise there is nothing else that is able to be powered by another source.

Oh I see what you mean. Yeah that's going to be tricky. The hub should max out at USB spec (.5A) which is what your getting.

Let me think about it. I like solving these kinda problems 😛

It would be amazing if you could. Are you running a N7?

If anyone can answer this then. Should my N7 basically sleep when my car is off? I thought it would shut off. Then start up when I turned it on. Right now; if my car is off and I press the power button it will come on like normal.

For Android, I know you can have it bootup on power.
Give these commands a try (make a backup first)

What gamesfrager said. You will have to root and mess around with kernels on the N7.

Also, you might need to get a different OTG cable (not going through a hub).

As far as shutting off goes, if you're just running it as a regular tablet, then I wouldn't expect it to do anything with car power down. You'll have to program it either with tasker or custom roms. (I think there is Headunit apps/roms out there for the N7)

Once you get the power issue figured out, the easiest solution would be using tasker. Set it to turn everything off (airplane mode) and go to deep sleep when power is off. Then turn on your necessities (bluetooth/maps/music/screen always on/etc) when power on

Currently running timur's kernel and utilizing tasker.

Anyone have a link to an OTG that actually works?

That I haven't looked into . The N7 is a very common device (esp for these types of projects) so I am sure you can find one with some digging... Let us know when you do

Still a single power source... right? Ultimately I only have one power source either way with my setup. The usb cord to the OTG. I think I just need to power the hub.

This is a very clean setup. Great work. Do you have a link to the top dash mount for the tablet?

I am doing a similar setup as this and that is the nicest top mount I have seen.

Is the Kuda base magnetic or just a flat surface to mount on?

Flat surface to mount on. I drilled a proclip into mine and secured it to the tablet with 3M body tape.
