Puff of blue smoke coming on boost?

I followed my wife home todas as she was driving our remapped E91 320D down the motorway which is smokey at full boost, but just remapped diesel smokey.

But i noticed that when the car was coming on boost each time, there was a small puff of blue smoke....

Does anyone know if this is a problem or what can be done if so to fix it?>

Thanks
Andy

Could be a few things -

Worn internal engine components
Fuel system defective or incorrectly adjusted
Damaged turbocharger
Air filter blocked
Air pipe into turbo restricted
Restricted oil drain pipe from turbochanger
Incorrect operation of crankase
breather system
Carbon build-up in turbo bearing housing

On a turbo petrol, id be very sure its turbo seals..

Or either a worn bore.

On a denz, it could also be these,

The 163 bhp model doesn't have DPF fitted so it will always be a little smokier than the 177 bhp version. I have a 163 and in an untuned state it smokes a bit on full throttle. With a tuning box fitted it smokes a fair bit especially at low revs when coming on boost. FYI my car only has 35k miles.

Thanks for that Craig....

I also had a wee look andthe turbo has a wee drizzle of oil in the inlet of it.

Is that right? Could the breather be blocked or summat? Could this oil be coming from the seals

Regards

To be honest I don't know enough about diesel engines and turbos to give you an answer on that one. I wouldn't have thought that it would be normal, are you losing any engine oil? I a have attached a section off a webpage which gives some more info on diesel smoke. Obviously there are lots of variations when it comes to engines but it may give you something to go on>>>

The Answer is in the Smoke

We can generally understand what is wrong with a diesel engine by the colour of smoke emitted from the exhaust. There are three basic colours - black, white and blue.
Black Smoke

This is due to a air to fuel ratio imbalance, either the fuel system is delivering too much fuel into the engine or there is not enough clean air (oxygen ) a few things to look for :

* Faulty injectors (injectors need attention at about 100.000 to 120 000 miles)
* Faulty injector pump
* Dirty air cleaner
* Turbocharger or intercooler faulty
* Problems within cylinder head, valves clogged up due to faulty EGR (exhaust gas recycling unit)

White Smoke

Normally means that the fuel injected into the cylinder is not burning correctly. The smoke will burn your eyes.

* Engine/pump timing out
* Fuel starvation to the pump causing the pumps timing not to operate correctly
* Low engine compression
* Water/petrol in the fuel

Blue Smoke

The engine is burning engine oil

* Worn cylinders or piston rings
* Faulty valves or valve stem seals
* Engine over full with engine oil
* Faulty injector pump/lift pump allowing engine oil to be mixed with the diesel

black sooty smoke is very different to blue oil burning smoke.

I noticed mine had a little puff of blue smoke on start up from cold and i mean a little.
Then it stopped.

Does anyone know what this could be or am i worrying about nothing. Spoke to the service dept at my local dealers and he said "we wouldn't be able to check that you had better call BMW Assistance"
