BMW Water Pumps
BMW has been getting supplied with substandard water pumps since 1990 on the 6 cylinder engines. That means E36/E46/E90's. BMW has had maybe 4-5 redesigns on these pumps from metal to ABS to combined metal and ABS all with pretty much the same result. Pumps fail around 50-65K miles. Good luck with the case action law suit since this has been an ongoing problem for 26 years. I think for the mechanical pumps a Stewart water pump seems to last since it is purpose built to last. BMW suppliers build them to BMW specs just like the electric pumps.
BMW has been squeezing their suppliers for years and here is the result. Why not add the ABS pump to the list since that is a common failure too by Bosch for a cost cutting measure regarding the brush holders. BMW used to stand for quality and durability at the cost of more maintenance. Not anymore unfortunately. This is my last BMW and I have been privileged to drive them since 1971... |

Maybe but it appears most of us are past the qualifying period. Unless you have a 335is or a Z4 i dont see it doing much good.

I believe its a 7-8yr limit so doesnt really matter as none of the N54 335i would qualify

Seems like 2006 models were the ones forgotten. I'm going to contact them today to hopefully get them to look into that.
Website for those interested: https://electriccoolantpumpsettlemen...ome/portalid/0 Never mind (for me anyway), failure had to occur when the car was <7 yrs old and <84k miles. Mine was 10 yrs/65k miles. I couldn't find easy contact info, but someone effected should definitely try to get 2006 n52 models included. |

2006 is not forgotten, it is excluded. Same as later year 328's, which are excluded also from the list in the class action documents. They all came with pierburg lower capacity waterpump than the continental waterpumps at turbo models. Peirburg pumps were/are very good quality and very well build.

I got the thing in the mail but my WP is still original and I've had the car since 12/06. I also got an epipen class action lol it's like so many lawsuits. I finally got the 2nd airbag replacement a week and a half ago. BMW was serious--must have gotten like 9 mailings, a phone call from the dealer, AND a FedEx letter to do the recall. I guess this is the permanent one....so why not have permanent fixes for WP, right? As an aside my wife has a 2011 GM suv and water pump is known issue--2008 to 2010 was covered by a 10 yr / 120k special warranty, and if failed Sept. 2019. At first I was mad because we had an extended warranty through Jan 2019, and how is it the 2011 is excluded when still has same problem.
edit on wife's WP: I set aside some time to DIY, and thanks to 2 excellent YouTubes, I did the job for about $140 using OE parts (well haha maybe they fixed the defect and it was made in Canada with a better gasket). If I had the extended warranty it would have still cost $106 for the deductible--so I learned and got satisfaction I could do it... |
