BMW E90 320i engine swap to 335i. Is it viable?
Expecting to get a typical response to this question like "Just buy a 335i" but I digress.
Anyway, is it viable to swap out the 320i N43 engine to a 335i N54? Can someone with the knowledge please fill me in on the logistics behind this? Thank you |

Anything is possible. It would be way more work than it's worth in my opinion. you would need st source a lot more parts other than the engine it self. If you can pull it off, good on you. I personally would just get a 335i. But if you are up for a challenge have fun.

I know someone who has put a S65 V8 into a 118d. Anything is possible, but do your research properly. Physically it'll be pretty easy. Electronics will become your specialist subject, so you need to be crystal clear on what modules & wiring you need from a donor car, and how to programme it all up afterwards. Remember the DME (engine ECU) is mated to the CAS (security module), which in turn is mated to the keys etc etc. Big job, but by no means impossible. Start a build thread (please)!

The electronics will be the killer. You not only need the engine, you need everything electronic related to engine control out of the donor car. They physical swap will be the easy part. Getting it to run into the new car will be hard part. Buy the whole donor car and keep it handy.

You will need the transmission, exhaust, and possibly differential (pretty sure the diff ratios are different). The exhaust, btw, may require trunk/underbody changes. Don't forget the fuel pump(s): the in-tank one may be different.
Electronics, as noted, is the biggy. |
