Fuel cap cord broke

As I was getting gas today the rubber cord on the gas cap broke at the base of the cap (fatigue failure). Anyone know what the part number is for that? Thanks!

I was told by my SA that there was no way to buy just a cord. I had to pop the $35.00 for a new cap and cord.

Tether only comes as part of gas cap - must buy entire cap...

Are you under warranty? I'd imagine this would be covered. The cord broke twice on my Subaru and they replaced it no charge ...hard to imagine BMW wouldn't.

Should be covered under smog warranty since it is part of the evaporator system.

Seriously, what are you guys doing with the gas cap? I've filled my car up almost 600 times and my tether is good as new. Besides there's a holder built into the fuel door, why do you really need a tether in the first place?

Mine broke also--right when I used my multitool to cut through the little bastard the first time I filled up. Consider yourself lucky and don't replace it.

Agreed, cars have been without this tether for years, so why be concerned?

Same thing happened to my 2015 X1. Both the dealership as well as BMW North America said it was not covered under the warranty. This is weird.

I got mine replaced under CPO a year or so ago. Guess my SA was being nice to me that day.

I repaired my broken tether with an electrical crimp connector, (aka 'butt connector') normally used for joining two pieces of electrical wire.

Nice thinking. Which leads me to think that maybe heat shrinking tubing might work?
Insert a smaller diameter first followed by a larger one to give it strength.
Never tried heat shrinking tubes, so not sure how they hold up.

Or maybe use the tubing on the butt connector to cover it up and make it look a bit nicer.

Reviving an old thread....

So my tether broke a few months ago. The E46 I got in September also had a missing tether as well. I dug around and found just the gas cap tether on Amazon. I bought 2 ea. on Jan. 4th last week for $16 ea. The price just got jacked to $23 ea. (a new cap is $24.44 from Tischer + shipping).

So just throwing it out there for everyone:
