Misfire on low RPM's/cruising, fine under moderate+ load

The past couple weeks or so, I've noticed this little miss in low RPMs (less than 2200), slow acceleration, and while cruising freeway or streets. Every once in a while at idle, there'll be a little blip in RPMs. Under moderate or high load, it seems to run completely fine. Can't really notice any power loss or anything. Also, didn't matter if the engine was cold or warm.

Well today I noticed that it got a little worse on the way to the gym. On the way back home it got a little worse. When I got a couple blocks from my house, it stumbled pretty hard and threw a yellow check engine light. Restarted the car and got it home.

Well, I came inside to do a little research and couldn't really find anything "exactly" like my problem. So I went back out to drive the car to make sure I knew how to exactly describe the conditions to make this post. Well, it didn't misfire once... Drove it around for 15min or so in the neighborhood to make sure it was all up to temp and whatnot. Tried all RPMs, different accelerations, and nothing.

Car is at just over 135k miles. I've had the car since 88k. Only thing that's been changed is the spark plugs and that was around 8k miles ago.
I do have a valve cover leak. I was trying to clean everything up and be really careful about getting anything on the plugs while installing them, but there is a chance something could have gotten on them and fouled out. That's one thing I saw while researching that could have happened.

Any help on what to look at would be great. Thanks in advance!

its a miss or surge? A miss will log a cyl missfire. A surge wont. IF you have a VC leak I know for a fact it will cause a surge in the 2000 rpm range. You can have the cruise on and the speed will change -2 to +2 just by going over an expansion joint at a bridge.

Hmm, I can't say it's a surge. I'll go have it scanned and see if there's codes.

Keep MHD hooked up and log and scan. It could be something simple or it could be scary, like a spun bearing (ask me how I know).

I don't have any kinda of BMW scan/logging software. And the only thing open today was Autozone. There was no codes though.

Im having the same problem. Bought the car with 107k miles. 1 month later after purchase there was an oil leak and coolant leak. Took it to the shop turned out to be the vcg and broken expansion tank with a corroded upper radiator hose.$1300 for labor and parts. Right after i got all those replaced i was driving and the check engine light came on and went to limp mode. But no ses light. When the check engine light comes on i just pull over turn off the car for about 5 min and then it drives fine. Does it like 1 a week so. Tell me if you find your problem

When fault isn't currently present generic scanner from AutoZone won't show it.

I posted in the FB group about having nearly an identical issue. WOT runs great - no misfires, no timing drops, everything is good. Under cruise it will periodically have a stumble or hesitation and sometimes it can be pretty unbearable.

Multiple people said it was injectors and said they had similar issues. I have 3 index 8s and 3 index 1s, I'm thinking the index 1s are probably going bad.

Im guessing they were coded appropriately right? How many miles on the x1?

what happens when vanos adapts are reset. Also do O2 controls if it continues... But not at the same time.

Bumping this thread, I'm starting to have the same issue. When cruising at 2k rpm or so, I can feel slight misfires or hesitations. No issues when getting into boost or higher rpm. This just started recently. Put in new plugs about 10k miles ago, walnut blast maybe 5k ago, then MHD tune soon after that. Car has been running wonderfully since all that was done, no codes/faults being thrown at the moment.

I'm having the same exact issue, brand new spark plugs and precision race work coils, index 1 injectors and I get a really bad stutter when cruising under 2000 rpms, idles fine and wot is fine, I've replaced my spark plugs twice since it's been happening and both times when I went to check them they were turning black and I only checked them after 100 miles of driving

Low rpm stutter N54

I'm having a really bad stuttering problem when just cruising under 2000 rpms. Car has 90k miles on it, I've replaced spark plugs, coil pack, lpfp, lpfp sensor, flashed my car back to stock and nothings changed, I am on index 1 injectors and I've never replaced them. I've yet to have a walnut blast done either. But I've replaced spark plugs twice since it's been doing this and every time I checked them they were turning black, I've also clean vanos solonoids and swapped positions but nothings changed

If a walnut blast hasn't been done, it's highly recommended. It could be the carbon build up causing the hesitation/stuttering

Inspect the plugs properly for injector leaks first

Any logs?

Here's 2 logs, take a look at the afr for bank 1 and 2. Both logs are just of me cruising, bank 2 seems to be worse than bank 1

Not looking good, could be leaking injectors.

Have you checked your plugs for leaking injectors?

Yeah the spark plugs were all black after 5k miles, couldn't tell if they smelt like fuel, I installed new plugs and after 100 miles they were starting to turn black
These were after 5k miles
