2010 N54 DCT 335i E93 - Transmission Fault - Help Reading Error Codes

Hi All,

I had my rite of passage over the weekend when my, new to me, N54 DCT E93 had to get recovered by the RAC. This wasn't the first photo that I wanted to be uploading here!

Had been driving around for 40 minutes or so, so the engine was fully warmed up, and then gave it a little bit of beans and I received this notice on the iDrive.

Following this I had no power and pulled over. Turned the car off and lost all electrical power, couldn't even put the hazards on. RAC came out and we found the negative terminal on the battery was loose, the battery voltage was also only 3.6 V. Hooked this all back up and the car started with no mention of the previous transmission fault. Took the car on a quick test drive and no further warnings, but definitely didn't shift as well. Agreed that I would drive it home (I was staying at a friends about 100 miles away) the next day, but any further warnings or noises I'd pull over. On the way back I managed about 20 miles before the transmission error popped up again.

Turned it all off and got recovered, got the car back home and am trying to get it into a BMW specialist. If anyone has any recommendations for any around London, UK, then I am all ears!

I was hoping that someone might of had a similar issue or know what the problem may be.

I've included the error codes that came up when we scanned the car on Saturday if anyone can help me decider them!

Thanks!

With any power related troubleshooting I'd start with buying a new battery before going near a garage. Even if the current one is recent the previous owner could have left the car sat for a long time and batteries don't like being fully drained. Given how many cars have been sat doing 0 mileage over the last year there's a good chance it's just that.

If you're still having problems after than then you would need to check the alternator is OK and that the ground straps are all still in good condition. That's something a garage might be useful for if you aren't into DIY.

Quick update in case anyone ever searches for similar codes.

A reply on another forum also suggested that the issue was likely to be with the charging system. Before replacing the battery I had a look at the voltages, I was getting 12.4 V from the battery with the ignition on and 15.1 V when the engine was running.

With such a high voltage and with a few of the error codes suggesting that they were from overvoltage I bought a new voltage regulator for the alternator to see if that was the issue.

I installed the new regulator today which was a really easy job, the hardest bit was getting the air filter housing out!

Following changing this I gave the car a quick run and the running voltage had dropped to about 14.5 V so still quite high but a little lower than before.

I've got a diagnostic cable coming in the post and hoping to check INPA to clear the codes and see if they reappear.

If the issue remains or returns I will get a new battery fitted (the current is 6 and a bit years old anyway) and then check the alternator and ground straps as the previous commenter had suggested.

Hi The voltage 14,5 V is normal I would say, when running the car.

As an update, the errors persisted so changed the battery which also hasn't fixed it.

Checked INPA for some real codes and if anyone has any experience with them I would greatly appreciate it!

Did you register/code the battery after installing it and clear all codes?

Yup, registered and cleared all the codes, these have come up in the last few hundred miles.

Cleared them again this morning when I read these ones, and had the fault so will reread and upload the codes from that in the next few hours

From what I understand, you need to code the battery if its different Ah rating or your switching to AGM,

Unless you replaced the battery with like for like same

Nothing really fancy I would say, just clear the codes and see which ones come back after the car has been at complete sleep. (Locked and off for 10min)

Most of these codes are not really a potential problem.
If the car starts and allows to drive, check another time for codes after 5-10Km.

We can look with you if you share the codes that come up after the above and the state of the car. (does it allow to drive etc)
